Reading is complex, but these five areas all play an important role.

Phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension are often referred to as The Big 5 of Reading.

Strong reading instruction doesn’t focus on just one piece. Students need opportunities to develop each of these skills, with explicit, systematic instruction based on what they need.

And an important reminder: when a student is struggling to read, we need to figure out which piece or pieces are getting in the way so instruction and intervention can be targeted.

Fluency is not about pushing students to read faster. 📚

For some students with dyslexia, fluency can be a challenge. The goal is to build accurate, automatic reading that supports comprehension.

Accuracy first. Automaticity follows. Comprehension is always the goal. ❤️
