🌸🍓 SPRING FRUIT FLOWER CUPS! 🍍🍇

Our little chefs had so much fun creating these Spring Fruit Flower Cups — a delicious edible garden made from layers of yummy ingredients!

🍫 Banana, cocoa & cream cheese chocolate mousse — our delicious “soil”
🍪 Crushed biscuits — adding that perfect crumbly texture to the chocolate mousse
🍍 Pineapple
🍓 Strawberries
🍇 Grapes
🥨 Pretzels — transformed into little flower stems!

From preparing the ingredients to assembling their own colourful creations, our recipes encourage children to explore food, develop confidence in the kitchen, practise fine-motor skills and, most importantly, HAVE FUN! 👩‍🍳

🙆‍♀️ Fine motor skills are an important part of childhood development. They help children control the small muscles in their hands and fingers, supporting everyday tasks like writing, drawing, dressing, using utensils and completing activities independently.

And the best part? Fine motor skills can be developed through play and everyday experiences — including cooking! 👩‍🍳

At My Little Kitchen, our classes give children hands-on opportunities to practice these skills while creating something delicious:

✂️ Cutting and chopping ingredients — building hand strength, control and precision

🥣 Mixing and stirring — strengthening hands and developing wrist control

🥄 Measuring and scooping — improving hand-eye coordination and accuracy

🤏 Pinching, sprinkling and decorating — developing finger strength and dexterity

👐 Kneading, rolling and shaping — strengthening little hands and improving coordination

🍚 Pouring and transferring — encouraging controlled, purposeful movements

Every chop, stir, scoop and sprinkle is giving little hands a chance to move, grip, control and coordinate. So while our little chefs are busy having fun in the kitchen, they're also developing valuable fine motor skills that support them in the kitchen, in the classroom and in everyday life.

Last week in the kitchen, our little chefs turned a simple ingredient into something delicious — creamy coconut milk rice pudding topped with cinnamon and banana! 😋

But this lesson was about more than just cooking.

As part of our M for Milk theme, we chatted about the different types of milk we find in the shops and, of course, the kids got to taste the difference for themselves! 👅 we love teaching children about the foods they eat, where food comes from, how it is made, and how ingredients are used to create delicious dishes.

At My Little Kitchen, cooking is a hands-on way for children to explore food, build confidence and independence, develop fine motor skills, and become curious food explorers — all while having fun and making something they’re proud of. 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳

Our little 2-3 year old chefs started classes this term at Tygervalley College 👨‍🍳🍌 and had a wonderful time making a delicious Banana Pudding last week! They eagerly got involved in every step of the process—from crushing biscuits and peeling, mashing and slicing bananas to whisking yoghurt until smooth and carefully spooning and layering the dessert.

These hands-on activities help develop fine motor skills, coordination, independence, and confidence, all while making learning fun and engaging. The learners took great pride in creating their own tasty treat and enjoyed watching their ingredients come together layer by layer.

What a sweet way to learn, create, and enjoy the rewards of their hard work! 🍌

Same recipe, different skill level 👩‍🍳🧑‍🍳 🍝 This week’s dish was a creamy vegetable fettuccine

With our Kids & Tweens cooking program, we adapt each program to match the age group’s confidence, coordination, and independence in the kitchen.

👧 Kids Program - Our younger chefs focused on safe, fun food prep skills:
✔️ Cutting up vegetables
✔️ Mixing tomato pasta sauce with cottage cheese
✔️ Sprinkling cheese on top

The vegetables were pre-cooked for them so they could focus on building confidence and learning the basics.

🧑‍🍳 Tweens Program - Our tweens took on more independent cooking tasks:
✔️ Cutting and frying the vegetables
✔️ Making the creamy sauce
✔️ Mixing the pasta through with the veggies and sauce

This helps them develop real cooking techniques, kitchen confidence, and greater independence.

Same delicious meal — different learning levels tailored for every age group.
