A sneak peek into a very special Koa Welcomes session. ✨

In August, our students had the opportunity to hear from Elspeth Merry, an award-winning UK-based music publicist and founder of Artists’ Way - a publicity agency that helps artists share their stories with the world.

Hosted by Majozi, our Head of Arts and Culture, the session gave students a behind-the-scenes look at the world of music publicity, storytelling, creativity, and building a career in the arts.

Elspeth shared so many thoughtful reminders with our students - from the importance of being yourself, to the reality that life doesn’t always move in a straight line. She encouraged students to trust the process, do what they love, and keep believing in themselves along the way.

These are the kinds of real-world learning moments we love creating at Koa: opportunities for students to hear from people working in the world beyond school, ask meaningful questions, and see what different paths can look like in practice.

The face of pure joy. ✨

In Baking Club, our students recently whipped up delicious banana muffins - and Savanna’s reaction says it all.

Koa’s opt-in online clubs give students the chance to connect with others who share their interests, explore new passions, build confidence, and form friendships beyond their Pod.

And sometimes, they also get to end the week with warm banana muffins. 🧁

Student News | Mia-Rose 🎶

A huge congratulations to Mia-Rose, who recently took part in MADDfest in Kimberley - an annual celebration of Music, Art, Dance, and Drama presented by St Patrick’s CBC.

Mia-Rose participated in two Under 16 categories: Strings Solo and Vocal Solo.

She received an incredible 93% for her vocal solo, the highest mark in her category, and 80% for her string solo. ✨

Mia-Rose was also one of our talented student performers at Koa Unplugged, and we’re so proud to see her continuing to share her gift. Well done, Mia-Rose!

More moments from Koa Unplugged. 🎶💛

From the first performance to the final applause, Koa Unplugged was filled with moments worth remembering.

Sam opened the show with incredible skill, Jesse performed his original song for the first time, Mia brought so much energy to both of her performances, and Amanye’s vocals were a definite highlight.

A special thank you to Majozi for sharing his talent, encouraging our students, and creating such a meaningful opportunity for them to perform alongside him.

Here’s a closer look at a very special afternoon with our Gauteng Koa community. ✨

How do science practicals work at an online school? 🔬💛

In this video, Jessica, our Subject Lead for Sciences and Physical Sciences Teacher, and Wongiwe, a Life Sciences Subject Teacher, explain how practicals come to life at Koa.

From virtual simulations and digital microscopes to senior-grade practical kits, students are guided through a safe, structured, and hands-on approach to learning.

At Koa, benchmarking assessments are about something bigger. 💛

In our latest blog, we unpack how assessments like the Grade 7 MATCH, Grade 10 ACER International Benchmark Tests, and Grade 11 IeBTs give Koa an independent view of how well our teaching and learning are preparing students for what comes next.

They help us look beyond one mark or one test - giving our academic team meaningful insight into student readiness, curriculum delivery, teaching practice, and where support may need to keep evolving.

Because strong schools don’t only assume their model is working. They look for evidence, learn from it, and keep improving.

Why the name Koa? 🌳

In this video, Lauren Anderson, Koa’s CEO and Co-founder, shares the story behind our name.

A Koa tree is known for wood that is both strong and flexible - two qualities that felt connected to the kind of school we wanted to build.

At Koa, that balance matters. We believe in robust, academically strong learning, but delivered in a way that is flexible, relevant, and designed for real life. ✨

Meet Iseldri, a Maths Subject Specialist at Koa. 💛

For Iseldri, one of the things that stands out most about Koa is adaptability - the way the team doesn’t run away from a challenge, but learns how to work with it and turn it into an opportunity.

Teaching is also the perfect space for her to bring together two things she loves: maths, and adding value to people’s lives.

And the message she wants students to take with them? Don’t run away from maths or be afraid of it. Learn the rules, give it time, and you may discover that maths can become a safe, creative, and even enjoyable space. ✨

A first look at Koa Unplugged. 🎶

Earlier this month, our Gauteng Koa community spent the afternoon enjoying music, conversation, lunch, and connection. It was one of those moments that reminded us how special it is when our Koa community gets to come together in person.

What made the afternoon so meaningful was seeing our students step onto the stage with such courage and confidence - sharing their talent with a whole community cheering them on, and having the opportunity to perform alongside Majozi, our Head of Arts and Culture.

Behind every event like this is a lot of care: students willing to be brave, families showing up with enthusiastic support, and a community that makes space for young people to be seen and celebrated.

Koa Unplugged was a beautiful reminder that while Koa is online by design, our community is very real.

Watch this space - we’ll be sharing more moments from Koa Unplugged soon. ✨
