On 30 September 2026, Maths And Science Academy hosted Komatsu South Africa Pty Ltd at Mmantutule Senior Secondary School in Mapela, where MASA and Komatsu have partnered to support the school through a Whole School Development programme.

In a community where education remains one of the most important pathways to opportunity, this partnership is about strengthening academic support and creating greater opportunities for learners beyond the classroom.

But perhaps the impact is best expressed by the learners themselves.

MASA Launches Research & Development: Focusing onSTEM 🔬 📚

We are proud to announce a new chapter for the Maths and Science Academy (MASA) with the establishment of our Research & Development (R&D) initiative, dedicated to advancing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) through research, innovation and practical solutions.

Our first initiative, the Indigenous Mathematics Research Project in North West, will explore and document Tswana mathematical knowledge systems, their applications, and their relevance to modern education.

For MASA, this is about more than conducting research. It is about connecting indigenous knowledge, education and innovation while developing approaches that respond to the realities of the communities we serve.

Through our R&D programme, we aim to strengthen STEM education, promote culturally relevant learning, develop practical solutions to local and national challenges, and build partnerships with universities, researchers, industry, government, traditional leadership and communities.

As we approach 10 years of MASA (2018-2028), our vision continues to grow from supporting learners in the classroom to contributing knowledge that can shape the future of education.

Maths And Science Academy(MASA) was pleased to participate in the Lephalale TVET College Occupational Programmes Roadshow, hosted at Matsiababa Secondary School and Diammon Secondary School in Lephalale.

The engagement brought together Lephalale TVET College, fellow Limpopo TVET Colleges, EXXARO Exxaro Grootegeluk Coal Mine, Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, MASA and other stakeholders with one shared purpose: ensuring that young people are exposed to the opportunities available beyond the classroom.

For Grade 9-12 learners, informed choices matter. Exposure to TVET programmes, occupational qualifications, funding opportunities, subject choices and career pathways can shape the direction of a learner's future.

At MASA, we believe academic support must go hand-in-hand with career guidance, access to information and meaningful exposure to education and industry opportunities.

As we celebrate our journey towards 10 years in education, we remain committed to connecting learners especially those from underserved communities to opportunities that can transform their lives. We build for the future.

Our Journey to 10 Years | Alumni Stories

As Maths and Science Academy (MASA) continues on its journey towards 10 years of impact, we are taking time to reflect on the learners who have grown with us and whose journeys remind us why this work matters.

Today, we celebrate Lebogang Mohafa, one of the early beneficiaries of the MASA Whole School Development Programme at Seritarita Secondary School.

Lebogang's journey with MASA started while she was still in high school. Throughout her schooling journey, MASA supported her with essential academic resources, including scientific calculators, study guides and ongoing academic support.

After completing matric, she was accepted to study at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits University).

At a critical point in her transition from high school to university, MASA stepped in again and funded her first-year university registration, helping her take that important next step.

But the journey did not end there.

Years later, as Lebogang progressed academically and reached Honours level, MASA once again supported her by contributing towards her Honours registration.

From a learner at Seritarita Secondary School to a Wits University student and postgraduate scholar, Lebogang's journey represents what MASA has always believed:

Educational support should not end when a learner passes matric. It should create a pathway from the classroom, through university, and ultimately into a successful future.

As we approach a decade of service, stories like Lebogang's remind us that impact is not only measured by annual pass rates or distinctions. It is also measured by the young people whose lives we have had the privilege of walking alongside for many years.

Lebogang was there during the early years of MASA.

Today, she is part of the legacy we are building.

Almost 10 years of developing learners. Opening doors. Changing trajectories. Building futures.

As MASA continues on its Road to 10 Years, moments like this remind us why the journey matters.

Today, one of our alumni shares his message wishing the Maths and Science Academy (MASA) a successful decade of impact. His journey with MASA started in Grade 9 and continued throughout his secondary-school years until he completed Grade 12.

But matric was not the end of the challenge.

After completing school, he had the potential and ambition to continue his studies, but his family could not afford the costs associated with entering university. At the time, one of the few options available to him was to pursue a truck-driving licence and begin looking for work.

MASA believed that his academic journey should not end because of financial circumstances.

Having already supported him through high school and assisted with his university applications, MASA took the decision to pay for his registration at the University of Johannesburg, helping him take the next step towards the future he had worked for.

Today, he is pursuing a Bachelor of Engineering Technology (BEng Tech) in Electrical Engineering at University of Johannesburg

This is what long-term educational support means to us. It is not only about helping a learner pass Grade 12.

It is about walking the journey with them, identifying the barriers that could prevent them from progressing, and where possible, helping to create a bridge between school, higher education and a sustainable career.

As we approach a decade of MASA, we celebrate every learner, alumnus, educator, volunteer, partner and community member who has formed part of this Journey.

Their stories are becoming the legacy of MASA.

From Grade 9.

To matric.

To university.

To becoming an engineer.

As MASA continues on the Road to 10 Years in Education, this milestone gives us an opportunity to reflect not only on how far the organisation has come, but on the measurable difference that sustained educational support can make in rural schools.

Over the years, we have learned that meaningful change does not happen through once-off interventions. It requires consistency, committed teachers, supportive school leadership, learner discipline, strong partnerships and the willingness to keep showing up.

One of the clearest examples is Seritarita Secondary School. When MASA began supporting the school in 2019, the matric pass rate was approximately 57.7%. Through sustained academic support and collaboration with the school, Seritarita progressed to 98.2% in 2025, with 111 out of 113 Grade 12 learners passing.

The journey at Mmatedu Secondary School tells a similar story. From a baseline of approximately 64.9% in 2021, the school progressed significantly, reaching 95.5% in 2024 and recording 91.1% in 2025. The challenge now is not simply to celebrate those results, but to sustain and strengthen them.

These numbers matter because behind every percentage is a young person whose opportunities can change through education.

As we move towards this important milestone, MASA's ambition continues to grow. We want to support more schools, strengthen Mathematics and Science performance, expand digital and technical skills, create more bursary opportunities and help more disadvantaged learners successfully transition into universities, TVET colleges and meaningful careers.

To the principals, teachers, learners, parents, communities, employees and partners who have contributed to this journey: thank you for building this story with us.

We are proud of the progress, but we also know that there is still much more to be done.

Reflection from MAPELA Circuit Awards and Prayer Day

Last week Thursday, MASA had the honour of attending the Mapela Circuit Academic Awards, a celebration of academic excellence, hard work and dedication.

The occasion was a proud reminder of what is possible when learners, teachers, parents and communities work together towards a common goal.

For four consecutive years, the Number 1 learner in the Mapela Circuit has come from a MASA-supported centre.

Maintaining this level of excellence over four years is a significant achievement and reflects the power of consistency, quality teaching and a shared commitment to educational excellence.
Our pride does not end there. In Term 2, three of the Circuit's top-performing learners came from MASA-supported centres, while the Number 1 learner in the District also comes from a MASA-supported school.

These achievements reaffirm our belief that excellence can be nurtured in rural communities when learners are given the right opportunities and support.

One of the highlights of these results is the remarkable progress made by Mmantuntule Senior Secondary School.

In Term 1, the school did not have a learner in the Circuit Top 5. By Term 2, it proudly produced a learner in the Circuit Top 5. This is more than an improvement in rankings-it is evidence that focused support, committed educators and determined learners can achieve extraordinary results within a short space of time.

At MASA, we celebrate every learner who received an award, every teacher who went the extra mile, every principal who provided leadership, every parent who offered encouragement, and every stakeholder who continues to invest in the future of our young people.

We extend our sincere congratulations to all the award recipients and our appreciation to the Mapela Circuit for recognising and celebrating academic excellence.

As we prepare for the remainder of the academic year, these achievements inspire us to work even harder. We remain committed to transforming education through Whole School Development, strengthening schools, empowering teachers and ensuring that every learner has an opportunity to reach their full potential.

Excellence is not an event-it is a habit. Together, we are building a brighter future, one learner at a time.
