SUNRISE HIGH SCHOOL INVESTS IN LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
The Student Representative Council (Prefects) of Sunrise High School had the opportunity on Saturday, 20 June 2026, to attend a leadership workshop during which lessons from nature were used to create awareness and equip learners with critical leadership skills.
The workshop was presented at Vakama Bush Camp, just outside Mokopane.
Willie O’Brien, a teacher at the school with experience in motivational presentations and leadership development, facilitated the process and explained the foundation of the workshop as follows:
“There are many obvious and meaningful lessons that can be learned from the behavioural patterns of wild animals for leadership development. These behavioural traits are highlighted during the workshop, enabling learners to identify with the unique behaviour of animals in their natural environment. In addition, specific personality and behavioural theories, such as the Myers-Briggs Personality Assessment and "The One Minute Manager" (Situational Leadership) by Kenneth Blanchard, are used to provide greater meaning and practical application for leaders.”
During the day, learners were equipped with, among other things, listening skills, decision-making skills, assertiveness, conflict management, communication skills, and the basic responsibilities of a leader.
These types of interventions are planned and presented throughout the year to ensure continuity and ongoing development.
