Hemelvaartdag
Around the age of two, children undergo a "developmental explosion." This is the year they transition from toddlers to more independent preschoolers, marked by rapid growth in language, physical coordination, and social awareness.
Here are the key milestones to look for as a child nears their second birthday:
# # 🗣️ Communication and Language
By age two, children are moving beyond single words and beginning to use language to express needs and observations.
* **Vocabulary:** Usually says at least 50 words.
* **Combining Words:** Starts putting two words together, such as "more milk" or "doggy run."
* **Following Directions:** Can follow simple, two-step instructions (e.g., "Pick up the toy and put it in the box").
* **Identification:** Points to things or pictures when they are named and can identify body parts when asked.
# # 🏃 Physical and Motor Skills
Coordination improves significantly as they gain better control over their large and small muscles.
* **Gross Motor:** Walks up stairs (sometimes one foot at a time), begins to run, and can kick a ball without losing balance.
* **Fine Motor:** Can stack a tower of 4 to 6 blocks, use a spoon to feed themselves, and may start to show a preference for one hand over the other.
* **Drawing:** Starts to scribble spontaneously and may try to copy a straight line or a circle.
# # 🧠 Cognitive Development
Their problem-solving skills and imagination are beginning to take center stage.
* **Imitative Play:** Plays "pretend" with dolls, animals, or people (e.g., pretending to talk on a phone or feed a stuffed toy).
* **Sorting:** Can begin to sort shapes and colors.
* **Hidden Objects:** Finds things even when they are hidden under two or three covers.
* **Independence:** Begins to show defiant behavior (the "terrible twos") as they realize they are a separate person from their caregivers.
# # 🤝 Social and Emotional Milestones
This stage is often characterized by big emotions as children learn to navigate social interactions.
* **Parallel Play:** Often plays *near* other children rather than *with* them, but starts to enjoy the company of peers.
* **Emotional Expressions:** Gets excited when with other children and may show more frequent temper tantrums as they struggle with frustration.
* **Empathy:** Might show simple signs of empathy, like hugging a friend who is crying.
# # 💡 When to Consult a Pediatrician
Every child develops at their own pace, but it is worth checking in with a professional if a two-year-old:
* Doesn't use two-word phrases.
* Doesn't know what to do with common objects (like a brush or spoon).
* Doesn't follow simple instructions.
* Loses skills they once had.
* Doesn't walk steadily.

Today we celebrated *Earth Day* by getting creative in the kitchen. The children made fun “earth sandwiches” using blue and green butter. The blue represents the ocean and the green represents the land. While making them, we talked about how important it is to take care of our planet. The children really enjoyed the activity!
