If you paddle a surfski, you should have good situational awareness.

Not just when things go wrong.

Every time you go out.

The key is to keep it simple:

Check the wind.
Look at the waves.
Know the water and air temperature.
Check your ski.
Check your pedals, seat and rudder.
Wear your PFD.
Wear your leash.
Keep your phone dry and accessible.
Carry an emergency steering cord.
Let someone know where you’re going.

And don’t stop assessing once you’re on the water.

Conditions change.
Your surroundings change.
Your situation can change quickly.

The better you are at noticing those changes, the better decisions you can make.

Situational awareness is one of the Essential Skills and a benchmark skill for a reason.

It’s something worth practising every time you paddle, so that when you need it, it’s already part of what you do.

Sometimes you just need to get on the water.

You don't need to be preparing for a race or chasing a big goal.

Maybe you want to learn something new. Maybe you want to improve your technique. Or maybe you simply want a good paddle in the ocean.

Our Daily Individual Sessions are available most days of the week, so you can find a time that works for you.

Come paddle with us.

SEPTEMBER FOCUS: BUILD 🌸💪

Spring is here and we change gear.

The Base is banked, so September is about building. We’ll spend more time at 80–90% effort, with race-pace blocks on Saturdays. Easy work stays genuinely easy so the hard work can be properly hard.

For the World Champs crew, it’s Competition Phase. For the CPC crew, distance is the priority, building towards 25km+ comfortably by the end of the month.

Bungy work stays in selected sessions, but the focus shifts towards quality and race velocity.

And with spring season opening, there’s plenty happening on the calendar. 🌊

Build now. Race later.

Paddling is always better with good company.

Grab a paddling buddy and come spend some time on the water with us.

Our Daily Sessions are a great way to share the experience, whether you are both working on technique, building confidence in the ocean, or just getting out for a solid paddle together.

We will tailor the session to suit both of you on the day, from focused coaching and skills development to guided ocean or downwind paddles depending on the conditions.

You bring the buddy. We will help you both get more out of your time on the water.

AUGUST FOCUS: BUILD PHASE 💪

August is where we start building.

We're still in our Base Phase, but the intensity lifts slightly to around 70–80% as we continue building a solid aerobic foundation for the months ahead.

This is the perfect time to refine your technique, experiment with different skis, paddles and gear, and make sure your setup is ready for summer. Don't overlook full-body conditioning either. Strength, mobility and stability all play a big part in becoming a better paddler.

Resistance work remains a key focus. Adding a bungee to your ski once or twice a week is a great way to improve technique, power and functional strength when the water is calm. Always prioritise good technique over more resistance to avoid injury.

Our World Championship athletes now move into their Competition Phase, with just 73 days to go until racing begins in Villajoyosa, Spain (9–11 October).

Whatever your goal this season, now is the time to build the foundation.

See you on the water. 🌊

Catching a wave isn't just about paddling harder.

There’s a bit more to it.

Before you even start paddling, you need to know where the impact zone is and where you want to be. Then it’s about choosing the right swell, getting your ski moving and timing your acceleration so the swell can pick you up.

Once you're on it, stay in control. Use your rudder, a light brace and keep paddling through the wave rather than letting the ocean decide what happens next.

And yes, when you get it right...

WHOOO HOO!

This is one of the Essential Skills we teach at The SurfSki School.

Save this one and work through the steps next time you're on the water.

What would you like to improve?

Maybe it's your technique. Maybe your balance. Maybe you want to feel more comfortable in the ocean or learn how to catch runs.

Our Daily Individual Sessions give you time to focus on the things that will make a difference to your paddling.

Come with a goal, or simply come and paddle. We'll take it from there.

The question is not "if", but "when" you will be joining our Downwind Camps.

There's a reason paddlers come back to Fish Hoek year after year.

Could it be the the seven days, the gear that's already sorted, or the bed waiting for you?

Nah!

It's the Millers Run, the world's best downwind route, paddled under the eye of myself Dawid and my brother Jasper Mocke.

From the moment you touch down to the moment you leave, you're in our hands: a no-pressure first day to find your feet, then run after run after run, as much as you can handle, each one breaking down the skills session by session: reading the swell, finding the runs, your stroke, your boat, your setup, your nutrition, your mind.

Newcomers arrive to learn how to paddle downwind. They leave having felt why people give their lives to it. That's the difference between a trip and a pilgrimage, and it's why so many return season upon season.

Have a look here to get a peek at what its like and then click the link to join one of our upcoming camps.

No two paddlers are the same, so no two sessions are either.

One person might want to feel more stable in the ski. Another might be chasing a more efficient stroke. Someone else may be getting ready for their first downwind.

Our Daily Individual Sessions are tailored to what you want to achieve.

Some of the things we regularly work on:
✔️ Balance and confidence
✔️ Paddle technique
✔️ Efficient forward stroke
✔️ Catching runs
✔️ Downwind skills
✔️ Ocean confidence

Whatever your goal, we'll help you get there.

Book your session and let's get started.
