At Happy Bears Playschool, we know how important it is to work on vertical surfaces. It encourages bigger arm movements and strengthens their muscles as they work against gravity. Activities like drawing on an easel or painting on a wall help develop shoulder, wrist, and hand stability, which are essential for fine motor skills and writing. The upright position also promotes proper posture and core strength while improving hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness. Additionally, vertical work supports crossing the midline, a key skill for reading and writing, making learning more engaging and physically beneficial.

At Happy Bears Playschool we take playing very seriously. Sometimes adults think children are just playing, but play builds important skills needed for life. It’s such a fun way to learn and build confidence. One example is through block play. Children learn about number concepts, measurement and geometry, without even realizing it. They develop perseverance, determination, and social skills – most importantly cooperation as they work together towards a common goal. It is problem-solving at its best – a skill that will enable a child to solve math word problems or to work creatively on school projects.

Sensory play at Happy Bears Playschool is always lots of fun. Sensory/Messy play encourages learning through exploration, curiosity, problem solving and creativity. It focuses on activities that engage the senses, and helps to build nerve connections in the brain’s pathways. This encourages the development of language and motor skills which can help the child complete complex tasks. It also helps with cognitive growth, fosters social interactions, and encourages experimentation.
Although it looks like a big mess, this kind of play is essential for little ones.

Before little fingers can learn to write letters, have finger strength and pencil control, they must develop their small muscles. At Happy Bears Playschool, we do lots of activities to strengthen their fine motor skills. Fine Motor coordination is important for them to perform basic everyday tasks such as dressing, tying shoelaces, preparing food and other self-care tasks. They need to be able to cut, paste and draw, and fine motor skills are absolutely essential for learning to write. It might be tempting to try to teach young toddlers to form letters, but their muscles are not yet developed enough for the type of pencil control needed. These early years are used for developing pre-writing skills by doing activities that develop the finger muscles. Research suggests that fine motor skills are so important that they are connected to how a child learns to read, complete math skills and other higher-level cognitive thinking. Here are a few examples of how we strengthen those finger muscles at Happy Bears Playschool.

Or let's have some fun with a gross motor activity! Our parents have awesome ideas and love to share them with the children.
