Having struggled with funding in 2015, the Phoenix is on the rise again. The Life-skills programme, "Starting with Us" has been re-shaped and named, "Phoenix Rising". The first Family Conference of 2016 was held at Eshowe Correctional Centre on 27 January 2016.
Phoenix Zululand
Phoenix Zululand Restorative Justice Programme is a life-skills and social reintegration programme for people in trouble with the law.
Programmes are outline briefly on the web.
Phoenix Zululand, represented by Jane Argall, Ntombi Lushaba-Daasvand and Nonceba Lushaba held Dr John Daniel to the light along with many others who celebrated his life and times at the Visitors Centre at the Durban Botanical Gardens. We listened, we laughed, we danced and there was even a Basotho rite of passage sung for him. The open mic session allowed for Nonceba to recount some of the stories of John in the SIT and prison context. What a send off. Hamba kahle John.
On Wednesday 6 August 2014, the Phoenix team had the opportunity to be part of Ayanda Gumede's funeral. The Anglican Church in King Dinuzulu Suburb was full of mourners remembering her life. RIP Ayanda.
This is a wonderful tribute to John Daniel. We are proud to have been associated with him.

Phoenix Zululand is saddened at the passing of two Correctional Officials from our Eshowe Correctional Centre who were keen supporters of our work and Friends of Phoenix. Siyabonga Manqele and Ayanda Gumede, rest in peace. You will be missed.
We pay tribute to a dear friend of Phoenix Zululand, John Daniel who passed away in the early hours of yesterday. We remember John for his love of people and his tenacity at fighting for the rights and freedoms we enjoy today. He was a father, an activist, an academic, a thought leader and a friend. We will miss him, he will always have a a special place in the hearts of those whom he touched.

Phoenix Zululand will host a Family Conference in Nongoma on Saturday 12 April 2014. It's a while since we've had a Family Conference there. We hope it will bring healing to the families involved.
Last week we had the privilege of attending the opening of the Qalakabusha Secondary School and FET. All young offenders will now have to attend school. Also on the table were the launch of 3 new books written by offenders, the Reading for Redemption project in partnership with UniZulu and a revival of the Victim Offender Dialogue.
