New name alert! 📣📣
A name has the power to ignite the imagination, rally support, and sustain a sense of pride. VVOB - education for development in South Africa and its partners, in recognition of this power, sought a name that would make Early Childhood Development (ECD) practitioners proud to be part of our new Learning through Play (LtP) initiative for the ECD sector. After much discussion, the project shall now be called Funda Udlale Nathi (F.U.N.), a phrase which translates from isiZulu as “Learn and play with us”.
Previously referred to by the name “ECD practitioner professionalisation on learning through play” or ECD LtP, the project aims to strengthen the ability of ECD practitioners at national and provincial level to apply play-based pedagogies. Working closely with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education (KZNDOE), as well as implementing partners Ntataise Trust and learning partner Neil Butcher and Associates, the project aims to reach 10,000 ECD practitioners and 2000 school and ECD centre leaders directly. By the end of its four years’ duration, 480 000 young children will have benefited from strengthened play-based learning.
An ECD-focused consortium led by the South African Institute for Distance Education (SAIDE) will focus on ECD-specific teacher standards, professional pathways, and guidelines for professional development service providers. Other key partners include the Department of Basic Education South Africa (DBE), the South African Council for Educators (SACE), the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), and UNICEF South Africa.
Funda Udlale Nathi is made possible through the support of The LEGO Foundation.
