Selborne College

This is the official Selborne College page. In 1892 another sporting milestone was reached when this school played its first rugby match.

Selborne College was founded in 1872 by Pastor Heinrich Muller, a German settler, and at that stage was known as the Panmure Public School. In 1880 the first recorded sporting engagement involving the school took place, namely a cricket match against Dale College in King William’s Town. Again the opponents were Dale College. After Pastor Muller's resignation in 1896, John Young piloted the school

We held our Annual Christmas Concert on 17 November 2023 and the combination of decorations, traditional Christmas songs and festive attire created a joyful and festive atmosphere.

The Music Department presented a diverse and lively programme including The Military Band, Individual performances, Marimba pieces, and a quick medley of 20 songs in 2 minutes, which made for an entertaining and dynamic Christmas Concert.

The boys, parents and friends of Selborne enjoyed joining in with the sing-alongs, creating a wonderful sense of community and festive spirit.

We bid farewell to our Class of 2023, on 26 October, as their school journey has come to an end. The Class of 2023 were the 2nd class to experience the traditional event of ringing the Jubilee Bell, as a symbol of the end of their school years at Selborne College and the beginning of their journey as Old Selbornians.

In the final words from Mr Dewar to the Class of 2023 he highlighted the following:

“As you prepare to embark on your individual journeys beyond Selborne College, let you carry with you these key ingredients for growth. May you remember that like apple trees, you too require nurturing, support, and the right environment to thrive. Just as an apple tree bears fruit, go forth and bear the fruit of your education and experiences by making a positive impact on the world. Your time at Selborne College has given you the tools you need; now, it's up to you to use them wisely and to grow into the best versions of yourselves”

“Thank you all for the wonderful memories, the growth you have shown, and the friendships you have fostered, Selbornians. Farewell, and may your journeys be as fruitful as an apple tree in full bloom”.
We wish you all the best for your final NSC examinations.

Selborne College Rowing Club hosted the second annual Founder's Day Regatta. The regatta aims to honor both Founder's Day and pay acknowledgement to the Club's 101 years of existence. The regatta format follows the classic Henley Regatta format with schools and clubs, irrespective of age or gender, racing a time trial heat over 1500m with the finals then being decided based on best heat times. The finals featured three boats per final. The regatta format allows for exciting racing with finals having boats of similar speed duking it out to the finish.

The A Final featured St Andrew's College First Four and Pair, as well as their U16 Eight. The B Final was a hotly contested race between Selborne's First Coxless Four and U16A Eight with the U16s just beating out the First Team in the final metres.

The results are as follows:
B Final
1st U16A 8+ Thompson
2nd JM 4- Whetton

C Final
2nd JM 2- Thompson

D Final
2nd JM 8+ Westlake
3rd U15 2x Rushmere

E Final

F Final
1st JM 2x Rawlins

H Final
1st U15 4x+ Ristow
3rd JM 1x Davies

We would like to sincerely thank the coaches, parents and volunteers for all their efforts in making the day a great success despite the challenging weather conditions. We would also like to thank all the sponsors for the prizes and donations; including the coveted and much beloved spanner prizes.

Founders' Day is an event Selborne College pauses to celebrate its rich history, promising future and allows us to highlight our values and traditions.

Thank you to our Guest of Honour, Dr Tim Gordon, for his address entitled ‘Memorials’ whereby he encouraged the audience to “Live your life so that your name lives forever, to be the great living or givers in your community”. He emphasised the privileges of living, of education and of sacrifice, which others have made on our behalf. “Let us continue to honour the living, our school, our memorial and to live our lives admirably.”

Congratulations to all the Staff, learners, Old Selbornians and the greater Selborne Family on a truly remarkable Founders’ Day. We were honoured to have guests from all over the world attending our 151st Founders' Day Celebration.
