Is Your Child Planning to Go to University Next Year?

In South Africa, many more learners want to go to university than there are spaces available. Because of this, good matric marks are very important.

For the 2026 academic year, public universities have space for only about 235,000 first-year students. However, more than 345,000 learners achieved a Bachelor’s pass, which allows them to apply to university. This means that over 100,000 learners who qualify may not get a place. They will not be rejected because they failed, but because their marks are not high enough.

The situation is even more difficult for many learners. The 2025 matric results, released in January 2026, show that about 54% of learners did not achieve a Bachelor’s pass. Even though a record number of learners passed at this level, the percentage dropped from 48% to 46%. This means that about 396,000–400,000 learners received Diploma passes, Higher Certificate passes, NSC passes, or did not pass.

Because university places are limited, learners need strong marks to compete.
