For Woodhill College teacher and Curro Create alumnus Neil van Schalwyk, Curro has remained part of the journey. Once a learner on the Curro Create stage, Neil now returns as a choir conductor, helping learners discover and share their talents.

Mia Dippenaar was just ten years old when she stepped onto the stage as Annie at Curro Durbanville. 🎭

What began as a love for performing soon grew into something much bigger – professional stages, national arts festivals, sold-out shows and opportunities to perform alongside some of South Africa’s best-known artists.

But Mia’s journey didn’t stop with performing. She began writing, directing and creating work of her own.

Her story is a reminder that sometimes one small opportunity can open the door to something you never imagined.

Interviews are increasingly about more than qualifications and job titles. Employers also want to understand your practical skills, how you work with others, and how you respond to challenges.

Before your next interview:

✅ Review the skills and behaviours listed in the job description.
✅ Prepare examples that demonstrate problem-solving, communication, resilience and teamwork.
✅ Structure your answers using the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action and Result.
✅ Focus on what you contributed and include measurable results where possible.
✅ Be honest about challenges and explain what you learned from them.

Your experience matters, but being able to clearly explain the skills you gained from it can help you stand out.

Some lessons stay with you long after you leave the classroom.📚

For Curro Mossel Bay alumna Zandri van Greunen, dedicated teachers sparked a lifelong love for language, encouraging her to think critically and express herself with confidence. From reciting poems in English class to exploring linguistics, her school journey was shaped by passionate teachers who believed in their learners.

Mandela Day reminds us that meaningful change often begins with a single act of service.
For Curro Alumni, it's an opportunity to reflect on the teachers, mentors and experiences that helped shape our journeys and to consider how we can pay that forward.

Your CV is your first introduction to an employer. Make it count with these five quick tips:

1. Tailor your CV: Use keywords from the job description. If they want social media skills, highlight the specific platforms and campaigns you've managed.
2. Professional summary: Use two to three lines to explain who you are, what you offer and what type of opportunity you are seeking. (e.g. Marketing graduate with content creation experience seeking an entry-level digital role.)
3. Show your achievements: Show the difference you made instead of simply listing your daily tasks. Instead of ‘Managed social media accounts,’ try ‘Boosted social engagement by 25% over three months.’
4. Keep your skills relevant: Include skills that are valuable in your chosen industry and remove outdated or unrelated information.
5. Align online: Ensure your LinkedIn dates and titles perfectly match those on your CV and keep your public profile professional.
