Swinging is so much fun but what benefits does it hold for your child? Their bodies and brain are getting so much benefit from it:

- Multi sensory input
- Strengthening their core muscles
- It can help to regulate their emotions and make them less irritated and anxious
- Can help with better sleep because their vestibular needs are being met
- Body awareness
- Spatial awareness
- Visual tracking (this is important for reading)
- The smooth back and forth movement is calming and soothing
- Body awareness

If you have a child that struggles to regulate their emotions especially when the day gets long and they have had many sensory inputs. Swinging will help your child to regulate their emotions better.

Mark making:

This weekend we visited a forest garden next to a river . I could not help noticing the signs that was put up, asking people not to make muddy prints on tree trunks and benches.

I wish I actually took a picture of the hand prints and the sign. In that moment I could not help to think how children will be children and mud on a tree trunk and table was an open invitation to make a mess, much to the frustration of the gardeners who have to upkeep the area and clean it off afterwards.

It made me think how strong this instinct is to leave our mark and how important this is in a child's development.

Not only is playing in mud or paint a wonderful tactile experience and the way your child first explores the world around them. But this is also the beginning of your child's first step towards writing.

Here are a few ideas how you can incorporate mark making outdoors:

-Water and soil or sand (easy as mud pies)

-Draw with chalk on side walk or paving

-Don't have a sand pit- use a plastic container lid or tray with water and sand and let your baby make marks in the sand.

-Take your babies' purity outside and give it to them on a lid or tray and let them explore the texture with their hands.

-Succulent leaves or green sticks on paving also makes for great mark making fun.

-Paint some chalk board paint on a wall and let your little one draw with chalk or water on it.
