Best Practices I Learned as a Regional Sales Manager During COVID—Still Essential for Maximizing Sales Team Potential Today

1. Holistic Understanding: Recognizing the whole picture is essential. During COVID, I found it valuable to understand what my sales reps faced behind the scenes—whether family, home life, or personal challenges. This approach still pays off today.

2. Build Genuine Connections: Personal connections make a difference. Knowing details like your reps’ spouses' names, children’s interests, or even their pets helped us work as a cohesive team.

3. Flexibility in Working Hours: Adapting work schedules to meet the needs of both the client and the representative was crucial. Flexibility helped strengthen our relationships and increase productivity.

4. Coaching with a Holistic Angle: Coaching shifted during the pandemic, focusing on the holistic needs of both the client and the representative, rather than only sales metrics. This focus on the human aspect made coaching more impactful.

5. Embrace Vulnerability: Showing vulnerability and openness is not a weakness. Instead, it fosters trust and authenticity in your team.

**The Results?**

- Daily check-ins provided support, structure, and meaningful discussions around value propositions and product selections.
- The sales team felt valued as individuals, not just as company assets. This approach empowered them to think creatively, adapting to a constantly evolving environment.
- Customer engagement improved as we acknowledged and respected their unique circumstances. Although call structures evolved, our goals remained clear.
- Kindness and empathy built relationships that have withstood even the most unexpected challenges.

What I Continue to Emphasize in Sales Leadership Coaching:

> Understand the holistic needs of both your team and clients.
> Your primary role as a sales leader is to guide, challenge, focus, motivate, and set a positive example.
> Superior sales results require dedicated time coaching and developing your team.

Recently, I listened to a podcast with Mike Weinberg, where a successful sales leader highlighted the same principles. The message was clear: **taking a holistic approach to team morale and customer relationships is key to long-term success.**

Remember, your sales teams are people with lives and families. When you invest in them as individuals, the sales numbers will thrive.

On this last day of 2023 from deep in the Cederberg, I find myself with so much gratitude for the lessons of this year, for the amazing people in my life, for the opportunities on the horizon and so much more.
So in stead of New Year Resolutions, why not sit quietly and imagine your hand, 5 fingers, each representing 1 important aspect in your life, & spend at least 1 minute on each to write down why you are grateful for that aspect- dig deep & really ponder of it.

Then start with Goals for 2024. Chose 5 from list below and decide on 3 specific timebound actions per goal. This is your 2024 vision board.
□ Finance
□ Health, Fitness, Physical
□ Passion, Career, Contribution
□ Soul, Mind
□ Family
□ Friendships
□ Travel, Holiday
□ Hobbies
□ Home
□ Garden
□ Business
□ ? Anything else?
