When a child claps along to a nursery rhyme or completes a rhyming sentence, something remarkable is unfolding — the neural pathways that underpin skilled reading are being laid down.

Rhyming builds phonological awareness: the ability to hear, identify and manipulate the sounds in spoken language. This is one of the earliest and most critical foundations of learning to read.
