Honouring Our MahaGuru

Every GGSD class and every special celebration begins by paying our respects to the late MahaGuru Gopalan Govender.

His framed photograph proudly adorns our classroom and our functions, serving as a constant reminder of the rich musical legacy that continues to inspire us.

Although he is no longer with us physically, his teachings, his spirit and his blessings continue to guide every rhythm played at GGSD.

It is with immense pride that our school bears his name.

May his legacy continue to inspire generations of musicians.

Certification Ceremony Celebration for Nelisha Govender

Today, we had the privilege of celebrating a remarkable milestone in the tabla journey of Nelisha Govender at her Certification Ceremony.

This achievement is the result of many years of dedication, hard work, perseverance, patience, and unwavering commitment. Through every challenge, Nelisha never gave up. She has shown us all what true passion, determination, and love for her instrument look like, and we are incredibly proud of all she has accomplished.

The Certification Ceremony opened with a beautifully sung prayer by our level 2 Student, Dharini Ponnan, which really set the tone for the rest the day.

A special thank you to our Master of Ceremonies, Zelda Kallooram, one of our Level 2 students, who did an outstanding job coordinating the program and explaining the examination process and the criteria required to successfully progress from level 1 to level 2. She conducted herself with confidence and professionalism, making the ceremony both informative and engaging.

Our heartfelt appreciation also goes to Tayuren Govender, our Level 3J student, who delivered a beautiful and inspiring keynote address. Tayuren shared his observations of Nelisha's journey, highlighting her dedication to completing all her Level 1 practical lessons and theory requirements. Hearing him speak so passionately about Nelisha's performance during her examinations is a true reflection of the mentorship culture instilled by our Guru, Guru Deshan Styler Naidoo.

Guru encourages his senior students not only to excel themselves but also to coach, guide, and mentor younger students as they progress through their tabla journey. Tayuren gave Nelisha valuable insight into what lies ahead as a new Level 2 student and explained how the qualities she has already demonstrated will continue to be strengthened and developed at the next level.

Our Guru is always immensely proud of his students and their achievements, while continually reminding them to remain humble, grateful, and grounded. These values, combined with hard work and discipline, are what make our students truly exceptional.

Nelisha, you have made us all incredibly proud. Your determination, commitment, and love for learning have brought you to this important milestone, and we have no doubt that you will continue to apply yourself wholeheartedly in Level 2 and achieve even greater success.

Once a GGSD Student, Always a GGSD Student

One of the greatest joys of our 15th Anniversary Celebration was welcoming back so many former students.

Some are now university graduates.

Some are professionals.

Some are raising families of their own.

Yet they all returned to celebrate the school that helped shape their journey.

Seeing generations of students reunited reminded us that while lessons may end, the friendships, values and memories created at GGSD last a lifetime.

Once a GGSD student...

Guru's Message to Woman

"You are enough. You are powerful."

During our Varalakshmi Poojay, Guru Deshan "Styler" Naidoo delivered an impromptu and completely unscripted message to the women and girls of GGSD and SMA.

What began as a sacred celebration became something deeply personal and profoundly powerful.

Guru spoke directly to the mothers, daughters and women of our school, honouring their strength, sacrifices, love, devotion and the countless ways in which they hold their families and communities together.

He began with words every woman needs to hear:

"You are enough. You are powerful. You are the captain of the ship. Nothing functions without you."

And then:

"Who you are is what makes you beautiful."

Reflecting on the deeper meaning of Varalakshmi, Guru reminded us:

"The universe spins on the divine axle of the Amma."

And perhaps most beautifully:

"Our Lakshmi resides in our house... it is the mother of the house that is the Lakshmi."

Guru spoke to the children about something they may only fully understand much later in life:

"You will never know how many problems in your life were removed or cancelled because of the prayer of your mother."

But Guru's message was not only about sacrifice. It was also a reminder to mothers to look after themselves.

"Mothers come first. Only when you function at that frequency can you give your children what they want."

He encouraged every mother to take time to breathe, rest and simply be.

"You are the captain of the ship."

And as our children continue to learn, grow and move forward, Guru reminded us of the unseen Shakti behind every step:

"When the children move forward, every step is elevated by the Shakti and prayer of each mother."

Guru, on behalf of all the fathers, sons, daughters and the GGSD and SMA family, we salute and honour every woman who continues to nurture our children, preserve our culture and propagate righteousness.

And to every mother:

May you always know how deeply valued you are.
May you remember that you are enough.
May you recognise your own power.
And may you always know that you carry Guru's blessings, prayers and salutations.

A spontaneous message. No script. No preparation.

Just Guru speaking from the heart.

GGSD & SMA Varalakshmi Poojay 2026

Today, GGSD and SMA came together in devotion and gratitude to celebrate our annual Varalakshmi Poojay, honouring Mother Lakshmi and the Divine Feminine.

It was a beautiful morning of prayer, culture, music and togetherness, made even more special by the love and devotion of our mothers

Traditional offerings of maa villaku, kolikutter, sweetrice and kadhla were lovingly prepared and placed at the alter of Mother Luxmi.

A particularly meaningful tradition saw the mothers prepare the sacred red threads, which were tied to the right wrists of every student, as well as to their musical instruments. A beautiful symbol of protection, blessings and the sacred journey of each child through music and culture.

Our sincere appreciation to Kaelin Naidoo, who did a fantastic job as MC, and to Nevashnie Govender, whose keynote address added inspiration and meaning to the occasion.

Today reminded us that Varalakshmi Poojay is not simply about seeking blessings. It is about gratitude, family, motherhood, prosperity, devotion and the preservation of our sacred culture.

At GGSD and SMA, we are blessed to celebrate these traditions together and to pass them on to the next generation.

May Mother Lakshmi bless every home with abundance, peace, prosperity and happiness.
