HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR VAN DER MERWE ! 🎉
We celebrate the man who has mastered the art of looking very strict... until you actually get to know him! 😄
If you’ve only ever seen Mr Van walking through the corridors, you’d probably think, “Yoh... this principal means business!” And you’d be right... to a point. Behind the stern face is someone with a great sense of humour, a contagious laugh, and a personality that many people don’t get to see.
Mr Van has a special place in the hearts of all our learners.
The Grade 7s love him... although they’ll admit they fear him just a little too! 😂
The Grade 4s and 6s have claimed him as their own but the grade Rs will definitely challenge that, always stopping to greet him with the biggest smiles.
One of the most beautiful qualities of a leader is taking the time to know your people, and Mr Van does exactly that. No classroom or learner is beneath his attention.
Grade 7 Camp just isn’t camp without Mr Van. The Grade 7s look forward to every moment with him, and we’ll never forget the year we jokingly “left him behind!” (When Mrs Vun beat him on a hike) Somehow, he still turned it into a lesson about perseverance, encouraging everyone to keep going and believe they could do it. That’s just who he is.
Now... let’s expose one of Durban East Primary’s best-kept secrets. 🤭 Mr Van LOVES a good dance! Sports Day comes around, a Maskandi song starts playing, and before you know it, those dance moves appear. We’ve all seen it... don’t deny it, Sir! 💃🏽🕺🏽
And those Grade 7 stay-awakes, while most people are enjoying the comfort of home, Mr Van is spending the evening with our learners, giving up precious family time to create memories with them. Whether he’s teaching them a few dance moves ( met n bietjie Jan Pierewiet 😏), making them laugh, or simply being present, those moments mean the world to our children.
Leadership is about far more than making decisions. It’s about listening, guiding, encouraging, and carrying the weight of many different personalities with grace. Mr Van somehow manages a staff filled with different ideas, different characters, and different challenges, while always making time for someone who needs advice, a listening ear, or a little encouragement about family, work, or life.
That is the mark of a true leader.
Thank you for your dedication, your patience, your wisdom, your humour, and for leading Durban East Primary School with heart. May this new year of your life be filled with good health, abundant blessings, joy, laughter, and continued favour in everything you do.
From all of us at Durban East Primary School...
Happy Birthday Mr Van! 🥳🎂 May God continue to bless you as richly as you bless those around you.
