FOUNDERS 2027 | 27–29 MAY

There is something special about coming home to DHS. A familiar face, an old nickname, a story retold—and suddenly, the years between us seem to disappear.

Founders is a time to gather, share memories and renew the friendships that began in the classrooms, corridors, boarding house and on the fields of our School. Those friendships became a brotherhood, built on trust, strengthened by loyalty and held together by a shared pride in the Blue and Gold.

Life has taken us in different directions, but coming together reminds us that we still belong. There will be laughter, a few quiet moments of reflection, and the simple joy of being back among old friends.

Start making your plans for Founders 2027. Contact your classmates, gather your friends and come home to DHS. There are more stories to share and memories still to be made.

TOM CHAMPION SCOOPS PLAYERS’ PLAYER AWARD AT KNOX

Congratulations to Tom, who received the Players’ Player Award at the Knox rugby presentation on Friday.

His family shared their sincere thanks with his DHS coaches and teammates, crediting the excellent coaching and support he received during Term 1 at DHS for helping make this achievement possible.

A INCREDIBLE FEW DAYS FOR DHS SPORT

It was an incredible few days for our sporting teams, with DHS celebrating outstanding success in both hockey and rugby.

The U14A and 1st Hockey Teams were crowned 2026 KZN Indoor Hockey League champions. The unbeaten U14A defeated Westville 4–2 in the final, while the 1st Team overcame Kearsney 5–2 to successfully defend their title—becoming the first team since Covid to win the league back-to-back. The U16A also bounced back from a semi-final shootout defeat to claim bronze with an emphatic 11–1 victory.

The 1st Hockey Team added to an exceptional season by winning the Kearsney College 5’s Hockey Tournament for the second consecutive year. Special congratulations go to their coach, DHS Old Boy Mr Bagcine Gqweta (Class of 2022), who has guided the team to both tournament victories.

DHS Sevens enjoyed an equally historic weekend. The 1st Team won the DHS Sevens Tournament after defeating Glenwood in the Cup Final. Their performances throughout the day were superb, conceding only 20 points across five matches and keeping three opponents scoreless.

History was also made when the DHS U15A and U15B teams met in the Cup Final—the first time the two sides had contested the tournament final. The U15A successfully defended their title, while the U15B enjoyed a remarkable campaign, defeating four A teams on their way to the final.

Congratulations to every player, coach and member of staff involved. These achievements add another immensely proud chapter to the rich sporting heritage of the Blue and Gold!

ON THIS DAY - 29 AUGUST 1953

On this day in 1953, the legendary Bill Payn, together with fellow schoolmaster Vic Pellow and “Ted” Bear, planted a Baobab Tree at DHS.

Following a DHS vs College rugby match—and a few customary post-match beers—the three schoolmasters planted the tree at approximately 9pm near Windmill Road, close to the former shooting range, where the 1st Team changeroom now stands.

A few years later, the Baobab was relocated to its present position near the E.G. Jansen Gates on Stephen Dlamini Road, formerly Essenwood Road.

Today, more than seven decades later, the Baobab—affectionately known as “Bill’s Tree”—remains a treasured DHS landmark and a living reminder of the characters, stories and traditions that have shaped our great School.

FROM 50 YARDS TO 50 METRES

The Evolution of the A.C. Martin Swimming Pool

The A.C. Martin Swimming Pool carries a proud history. Originally constructed as a 50-yard pool, it was extended to the international length of 50 metres in 1995.

As part of the project, the roof of the scoring room was replaced with a concrete slab designed to support a scoreboard. The design engineer responsible for the extension was Alex McTavish.

The extension of the A.C. Martin Swimming Pool was officially opened on 10 February 1996.

As many of you will be aware, DHS is currently undertaking an exciting upgrade of the swimming precinct. The project includes improvements to the clubhouse, viewing deck, and male and female changerooms.

The latest upgrade marks another important chapter in the development of this historic DHS facility—honouring its proud past while creating an improved sporting environment for present and future generations of DHS boys.

DHS HOCKEY CELEBRATES AN OUTSTADNING 2026 SEASON

The 2026 hockey season was another proud and successful chapter for DHS Hockey, marked by remarkable achievements across all age groups.

DHS fielded 14 teams during the season, with an impressive 36 players earning KZN representation and eight players selected to represent South African Schools.

The U16A team enjoyed an outstanding campaign, winning the prestigious Hibbert Shield, while the 1st Team successfully defended their Kearsney 5’s title by winning the tournament for the second consecutive year.

Both the 1st Team and U14A remained unbeaten at home throughout the season. The 1st Team also achieved a significant milestone by defeating Northwood both home and away for the first time.

The U14A team completed an exceptional Indoor Hockey League campaign, winning every match and finishing at the top of the league.

In the Fairtree Combined SA Schools Sports Hockey Rankings, DHS was ranked FOURTH in the country, with three teams finishing among the top six nationally:
• 1st Team 4th
• U16A 4th
• U14A 6th

These results reflect the dedication and commitment of our players, coaches, management, and support staff, as well as the continued strength and growth of hockey at DHS.

DHS RUGBY SEASON 2026 – SEASON WRAP

The 2026 rugby season was another proud chapter in the rich rugby tradition of Durban High School.

Across the season, DHS fielded 22 rugby teams, with six teams finishing unbeaten: the 2nd XV, U16A, U15B, U14A, U14B and U14C.

Our representative achievements were equally impressive:
• 45 players selected for the Sharks High Schools teams
• Five South African Schools representatives
• One SA Schools player
• Four SA Schools A players
•
In the Fairtree SA Schools Combined Rugby Rankings, DHS finished sixth nationally—just behind the country’s top five powerhouse rugby schools—and was proudly ranked the number one school in KwaZulu-Natal.

These outstanding achievements reflect the dedication and commitment of our players, coaches, staff, and the entire DHS rugby community.
