I've been having a lot of conversations lately with managers wanting to know how to build trust. I very much agree that trust building requires a set of actions and starts with the leader developing self-awareness. This article extends this concept to awareness of biased thinking:

Building trust is challenging for many leaders, due to cognitive biases. If left unchecked, these biases form leadership blindspots and wreak havoc on maintaining trust.

Worthwhile read from the Harvard Business Review: "The psychological toll of the pandemic has challenged workers and managers in a variety of ways. As we head into the third year of Covid, a new issue has sprung up: “splitting,” a mental defense mechanism which allows us to tolerate difficult and even unbearable emotions by seeing someone or something as either heroes or villains, good or bad, “with us” or “against us.” This can result in tension and conflict. To manage it, leaders need to focus on three areas: identifying splitting triggers in themselves, spotting splitting behavior on their teams, and focusing on reuniting and reintegrating relationships."

We’re in a new psychological phase of the pandemic, which is manifesting in increased confrontation on many teams.

It may not be intentional, but when we tell people who have experienced a difficult event that it could have been worse, we are telling them not to feel what they feel. We are inadvertently diminishing their experience. We are taking away a safe space for people to grieve what they have lost. Empathy is about accepting what people may feel about their experiences. When we accept and acknowledge the difficult times people have experienced, we are giving a sense of recognition, an opportunity to talk, a space to process their reality. We are saying, 'It's okay to feel what you feel, what you experienced was indeed hard, and I'm going to be present with you'.

A unique Providing Psychosocial Support 3-day training programme to develop good listening with empathy skills to support people in crisis.

Durban has suffered another blow of loss and hardship. It is heart breaking to see and hear about the devastating affect of the flooding. In the immediate aftermath of a crisis people often need both practical and emotional support. We have 2 leaflets on our website providing guidance for coping with a crisis for both the self and for assisting others. May we find our way through this too ❤

Human Way training offers a number of PDF free resources for training, school talks, peers. Including ICE cards and advise on coping with crisis.

I'm never sure when I stumble on a great quote if it has been attributed accurately, let alone said. Nevertheless, sometimes a great quote nicely sums up one's thinking for the day so what the heck....here is today's offering: 'Be yourself; everyone else is taken" - Oscar Wilde. Now all that is left to do is figure yourself out. Self awareness: that is the starting point.
