What is baby sign language?
It’s a means of communicating with your baby before they have matured and developed enough to be able to talk.

Babies from as young as 6 months are able to learn how to communicate their needs through sign language. The pathways between their brain and hands develops sooner than that of their mouth, tongue and throat. So it makes sense to use their hands to talk while they’re still little! This reduces frustration, results in fewer tantrums and tears (from both of you!) and builds trust between you and your baby.

Spending time outside with your baby provides so many lovely opportunities for them to sign! Birds, bees, trees, flowers, wind, sun, rain, airplanes, helicopters, the moon - you can have so much pointing them out to your baby and teaching them. Before long, they will start noticing these things too and signing to you before you have even seen them! It’s incredibly rewarding and your clapping and praise for your clever baby will encourage them further.

When your baby is so keen to sign what she saw, that she opens the rain flap to show you!

This is why we sign with our babies! We want to encourage communication and connection between you. When your baby sees something interesting, she can tell you about it. This then gives you a wonderful opportunity to teach her all about it. For example, when she sees a dog you can teach her about what noise a dog makes, what colour the dog is, how many legs it has and how to be gentle with it. And you know she understands what you’re saying!

They love nothing more than sharing that excitement with us, but babies get frustrated when they can’t share a new discovery with us. By teaching them how to sign we open up a whole new world of fun for them!

Today I want to share a bit of background of Signing Baby - it was originally owned by my special mom, Yogie.

My mom ran a beautiful playschool in Durban for 25 years, and in this time she realised how much easier it was to communicate with the children through signing.

The benefit was seen when children were managing to seemlessly communicate their needs with staff and friends through sign, even when they were still learning to speak. The level of frustration was significantly lowered, therefore creating a far more harmonious environment for all of the children, and teachers, at school.

I could not wait to implement this lifestyle into my own home when I became a Mom, and my girls took to it beautifully. It quickly became a way of life and helped us tremendously with recognising what they needed.

When my mother retired, I was super excited to take over this wonderful business and to share in the joy that I've witnessed it bring to so many families over the years.
