🎶 KZN Philharmonic Orchestra Delights Overport SRS Learners 🎻
Today, Overport SRS had the wonderful privilege of hosting the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra for a spectacular musical performance that entertained and educated both learners and educators alike. 🎼✨
During the concert, the conductor introduced learners to the different families of instruments found in an orchestra. Learners learned about 🎻 string instruments such as the violin, viola, cello, and double bass; 🎶 woodwind instruments including the flute, piccolo, clarinet, and oboe; 🥁 percussion instruments such as drums and cymbals; and 🎺 brass instruments like the trumpet, trombone, and French horn.
The performance was both interactive and engaging, giving learners the opportunity to experience the beauty of orchestral music while expanding their musical knowledge. Both learners and educators were delighted and thoroughly enjoyed the concert. 🎵💫

Grade 5 Learners Shine at Speech Contest
On 20th May 2026, Grade 5 learners participated in a speech contest held at Al-Falaah College. Participants were given the opportunity to speak on meaningful topics such as “Young People Make a Difference,”, "Friends Make a Difference," "a Positive Attitude," and “Bullying in Schools.”
We are proud to acknowledge two of our Grade 5NB learners, Ilyana Sirkoth and Ilham Mohamed, who represented Overport SRS with confidence and enthusiasm. Both learners performed exceptionally well and made our school proud with their excellent presentations.

Grade 7 Learners Learn Budgeting Skills with Capitec
Our Grade 7 learners recently enjoyed an exciting and educational visit Capitec Bank members, where they took part in a fun interactive game focused on budgeting and financial literacy. Through the activity, learners gained valuable knowledge about managing money, making smart financial choices, and the importance of budgeting from a young age.
To make the experience even more memorable, each learner was gifted their very own game to take home and enjoy.

Overport SRS Commemorates Ascension Day
Today, Overport SRS held a meaningful and inspiring special assembly in honour of Ascension Day, an important occasion in the Christian calendar that commemorates the ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven following His resurrection. Ascension Day reminds us of the values of faith, hope, and spiritual reflection.
Learners took part in a variety of wonderful performances, including speeches, skits, and musical items, to educate and inspire us about the significance of Ascension Day. Their thoughtful presentations helped deepen our understanding of this important day and its message.
Adding to the celebration was a special dance performance by a Grade 7 learner, which was thoroughly enjoyed by both learners and staff. The performance brought energy and joy to the assembly and added a memorable touch to the programme.

Overport SRS Primary School hosted a heartwarming Mother’s Day presentation that truly celebrated the love, care, and dedication of all mothers and mother figures. The event was a vibrant and joyful occasion, filled with a variety of performances that showcased the incredible talents of the learners. From lively dance routines and melodious songs to heartfelt poems and dramatic skits, each performance was thoughtfully prepared and delivered with enthusiasm and confidence.
The learners poured their hearts into every moment, expressing their gratitude and appreciation in the most touching ways. Their energy and excitement lit up the atmosphere, creating a memorable experience for everyone in attendance.
The presentation not only highlighted the creativity and dedication of the learners but also reflected the commitment of the educators who guided and supported them. It was a beautiful reminder of the strong sense of community within the school, where special occasions are celebrated with unity and pride.
We would also like to extend a heartfelt Happy Mother’s Day to all the teachers and mothers in our school community. Your love, patience, and unwavering support do not go unnoticed, and you are truly appreciated every single day.

World Reading Day at Overport SRS
On 23rd April, Overport SRS proudly celebrated World Reading Day, promoting the joy and importance of reading among our learners. The day was filled with excitement and creativity as children participated in a variety of engaging activities and performances aimed at encouraging a love for books.
Learners showcased their talents through speeches, dramatic readings, and creative presentations, all centred around the theme of reading. Adding to the fun, learners were also given the opportunity to dress up as their favourite book characters, bringing beloved stories to life and inspiring others to explore the world of books.
The celebration was a wonderful success, reminding us all that readers are leaders. A big thank you to our learners and teachers for making the day both meaningful and enjoyable! 📚🌟

Honouring Freedom Day at Overport SRS
Overport SRS proudly commemorated Freedom Day, a significant occasion in South Africa’s history that marks the first democratic elections held on 27 April 1994. This day reminds us of the values of freedom, equality, and human dignity, and the sacrifices made by those who fought for a just and inclusive society.
During the assembly, our Principal delivered a meaningful reading of the Preamble of the South African Constitution, reminding learners of the rights and responsibilities we share as citizens of our nation. This powerful moment reinforced the importance of unity, respect, and justice for all.
Learners also played an active role in the celebration by performing speeches, poems, dances and other items that educated and inspired us about Freedom Day and its significance. Their performances highlighted the importance of appreciating our freedom and working together to build a better future.
The programme was both educational and inspiring, leaving us with a deeper understanding of our country’s journey and the value of the freedoms we enjoy today. 🇿🇦✨

SURYA NAMASKAR 108 CHALLENGE - EVENT REPORT
A morning of unity, exercise, and community spirit
The 108 Sun Salutation Challenge was an absolutely beautiful success. We were blessed with a large and enthusiastic turnout on the SRS Primary School astro turf, where the energy, discipline, and joy of everyone present created a truly uplifting atmosphere.
A heartfelt thank you to SRS Primary School for opening their grounds to us, and a special word of gratitude to the Principal and Mrs Sandra Hoosen, the school secretary, for their kindness, support, and seamless coordination. Their generosity made it possible for Yogam Yoga to host this meaningful community event in such a safe and welcoming space.
Participants of all ages rose to the challenge, completing their Sun Salutations in the spirit of seva (service). Yogam Yoga, a charity is particularly dedicated to feeding young people around Durban, supporting literacy, and offering yoga and mindfulness classes to disadvantaged children.
The morning was a reminder of what we can achieve when we come together with purpose - strength in movement, unity in breath, and compassion in action.
Thank you to everyone who showed up, supported, and shared in this powerful practice. Together, we are helping Yogam Yoga continue its work of healing, education, and upliftment in our community.

Cycling Achievement for Overport SRS Learner
We are proud to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Khethelo Mdletshe, a learner at Overport SRS Primary, who recently participated in the CSC Cyclist Return Schools Series.
Competing in the challenging 42 km race from Durban to Mdloti, Khethelo (Race Number 704) delivered an impressive performance and secured 3rd place in the Under-13 category.
