At the South African Goju Ryu Karate-Doh Jundokan Dojo's, grading is a culmination of the effort, energy and consistency in the dojo, week in, week out!
Its NOT an incentive/reward to continue one's journey in the dojo if the contribution of effort and energy, consistently is not evident.
Last night at the Sherwood Dojo in Durban, all the above and more was apparent.
The grading from Ungraded up to Purple with our adults and juniors that train 3 times a week with us was on-point and as expected considering the output at each Keiko.
Kihon (Basic), Kihon Ido (with movement), Kata from Gekisai dai Ichi through to and, including Koryu Kata Saifa, Randori Kumite (non-stop contact fighting) and then Sanchin Kata for each group was presented with quality, effort, intention and a clear understanding of the waza (technique).
We move up a gear now!

‘Use your energy wisely’ - Seiryoku Zenyo
Having been blessed to play Professional football at the highest level in South Africa for almost as decade, it was always Karate that was my 1st passion. From a boy (10 years old at the time), I had no doubts that I would be practicing (not teaching) Karate for the rest of my life……. I firmly still believe that!
I’m also so glad that I had wonderful life lessons and realised that it’s not about concerning yourself with popularity, being liked nor being with the ‘in-crowd’ but rather about diligently working hard every day regardless!
The words I keep posting, ‘for me, by me so only then am I comfy with sharing/teaching others’ is my reality and priority. I live by it!
This mornings personal Keiko was just so pleasing to my soul. A month of ‘low key’ training during Ramadan, this morning I really went for it and pushed myself ……. And my body and spirit reacted in a way that pleased my soul.

The Story of us...
Personal effort and enthusiasm is what most of our juniors bring ONTO the Dojo floor at EVERY session.
Bring just that with you and, WE will bring the mentorship, guidance, technique etc, etc.
Quite often a small number appear not to be in the mood or just dont want to push themselves further. Those we prompt and drive harder to achieve and aspire!
THIS is how we operate at the SA Jundokan....YOU and US, together!
We are NOT a gym!
Karate-Doh is NOT a sport!!

With almost an 80% turn-out and with about 70% of them observing the Ramadan fast (no water nor food from sunrise to sunset), our Goju Ryu ‘warriors’ again, have a 110%.
Energy, effort and technique a clear understanding of what, why and how!
Always in awe of our Kohai, Sempai and Sensei’s who all lead by example, at the South African Goju Ryu Karate-Doh Dojo’s in Durban, Pretoria & Johannesburg.
