"A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination."

Mandela Day is more than a date on the calendar, it’s a challenge to live with purpose, even as students.

At Effingham Secondary, we believe education isn’t just about passing exams, but about building character, resilience, and compassion.

Nelson Mandela showed us that knowledge without action means little, and that real leadership begins in the everyday choices we make. In how we treat each other, how we show up, and how we push forward, even when things get tough.

His legacy lives on in classrooms like ours, where the future is being shaped, one learner, one act, one idea at a time.

No desks. No Wi-Fi. Just sweat, teamwork, and adrenaline!

Effingham Secondary took on Bootcamp at Giba Gorge, and it was next-level.

From muddy trails to team challenges, we pushed limits, faced fears, and laughed through it all.

If you weren’t there, you seriously missed out. This is how memories are made.

Who needs Netflix when you’ve got your whole grade laughing, snacking, and watching together?

Movie Night at Effingham Secondary was a vibe! Jokes flying, popcorn spilling, and memories being made with every scene, because let’s be real... movies just hit different when you’re surrounded by your friends.

If you missed it… ouch. Don’t make that mistake next time.

They were learners, just like us

On June 16, 1976, students stood up against injustice in education. Their bravery gave us the freedom to learn.

Happy Father’s Day from Effingham Secondary School

To all the fathers and father figures in our school community, thank you 💙

Thank you for the guidance you give, the values you teach, and the quiet sacrifices you make. Whether you're helping with homework, cheering from the sidelines, or simply leading by example, your presence shapes the future in powerful ways.

Today, we honour your strength, support, and love.
Wishing you a day filled with appreciation and joy.

With gratitude,

ESS threw open the doors of our newly revamped school hall with a bang, and what a celebration it was! The day kicked off with a high-energy programme packed with fun, flair, and a few happy tears. First up was a round of applause for our sports and academic stars of Term 1, because brains and brawn both deserve the spotlight.

But the real showstoppers? None other than the legendary TEE Xaba from East Coast Radio, who brought us great vibes, and the phenomenal Shantell Mncube, a powerhouse motivator and graduate in Prosthetic Studies, who lit up the room with words that made us laugh, think, and maybe want to conquer the world just a little.

To wrap up the day in true ESS style, we crowned our dazzling Mr and Miss ESS. If this reopening was anything to go by, the ESS hall is officially back in business and better than ever!

DO NOT LITTER! A special thanks to Jordan Church Youth and DSW Education (Durban Solid Waste) for partnering with us on this important initiative.

At Effingham Secondary School, we took a firm stand for our environment. With the help of DSW, our learners participated in a hands-on clean-up drive that reminded us all of the value of community pride and environmental responsibility.

Let’s build a culture of responsibility.
Here are some simple but powerful rules we can all follow:

1. Take out your trash on time, don’t leave bags lying around where they attract pests and scatter waste.

2. Do not throw litter out your car or taxi window, it’s lazy, harmful, and shows no respect for your community

3. Speak up when you see someone litter. In countries like Japan, China, and Germany, people politely but firmly remind others to respect public spaces. Let’s do the same here.

4. Keep a bag in your car for waste until you can dispose of it properly.

5. Recycle where possible, reduction starts with you.

At ESS, we’re setting an example, not just for students, but for the whole community. A clean space is a shared responsibility. Together, let’s make Effingham, eThekwini, and our Earth cleaner and brighter.
