What happens when a young rugby player leaves home, travels thousands of kilometres, and steps into a completely new country, school and culture?
For Kvido Zak, it became an unforgettable journey of rugby, education, friendship and personal growth.
Here is Kvidoโs story, in his own words: โEver since I was a young boy in Czech, I dreamed of playing rugby overseas. Last year, I had the opportunity to visit South Africa and choose between three schools in KwaZulu-Natal, one of which was Glenwood.
At the time, Glenwood's rugby results were not as strong as those of the other two schools. However, what mattered most to me was not the scores, but the passion, tradition, and spirit that were so clearly evident throughout the Glenwood rugby programme.
At just 16 years old, I was nervous about leaving my family and home behind to spend four months in South Africa. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
From the moment I arrived at Gibson House, I felt welcomed and accepted. It quickly became my second home, and the boys in the boarding establishment became like a second family to me.
I initially joined a Grade 11 class before moving into the Cambridge programme, where I participated in English lessons and had the opportunity to meet new people and form lasting friendships.
Glenwood is far more than a school uniform or a classroom. It is a brotherhood, a community, and a place where young men are encouraged to become the best versions of themselves.
I will always be grateful for everything that both Cambridge International School and Glenwood High School have taught me. The experience has helped shape me into the person I am today. I am proud not only to have represented the school on the rugby field, but also to have been part of its academic community.
