On the 18th of March 2026 the Co-Operative Education Unit successfully hosted the first Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment Advisory Board meeting at Coastlands Hotel, Musgrave. Chaired by Dr Govender from Tekmation, the meeting brought together departmental representatives who shared key achievements, progress and challenges from the year 2005, along with strategic plans for 2026.

A key highlight was the strengthening of industry partnerships with organisations such as eThekwini Municipality, Mondi, Nanda Seminary and IBM. These collaborations continue to create valuable opportunities for student development and industry exposure.
Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) indicated its interest in holding further discussions with DUT regarding potential collaboration, particularly at NQF Levels 9 and 10, where QCTO currently has limited provision. It was noted that there are opportunities for the University to offer programmes at these levels in collaboration with QCTO.

The faculty reported that it has the capacity to place large numbers of students in industry. The Co operative Education Department confirmed that it would assist with transport arrangements to support such initiatives.

Opportunities for the secondment of academic staff to industry were also discussed, particularly to support academics who do not currently have industry exposure.

The session also emphasized the importance of research, industry engagement and student support initiatives with a strong focus on preparing graduates for the world of work.
