A sunny day, two happy dogs and one happy student plugging away at his Cambridge AS level chapter. Each child is a unique challenge and faces their own battles. This particular young man faced some major challenges over and above his high functioning autism. It has been an absolute delight to me helping him identify, strategise and get through the obstacles. Everyone needs someone in their corner.

A national survey of business and nonprofit leaders in America found that a resounding 93% of respondents believe that “a demonstrated capacity to think critically, communicate clearly, and solve complex problems is more important than [a candidate’s] undergraduate major”.
If you are made to think, you’ll learn
John Dewey, Approaches to learning and teaching Science p.14
In education, critical thinking has long been established as an important transferrable skill. At a Cambridge Assessment seminar in the UK in 2010 Richard Wainer, Head of Education and Skills at CBI, said:
The ability to think, reason and make sound decisions is a vital skill for the workplace – and crucial for employees who want to do well and advance…yet many firms have expressed concerns about the lack of problem-solving skills they are seeing in school leavers.
It is clear critical thinking is an important skill for life. Students will become confident analytical thinkers who can interrogate sources and evaluate claims, helping them in their future studies, lives and careers.
How then do we integrate critical thinking effectively into the science classroom?
Inquiry-based learning
Critical thinking is at the heart of scientific inquiry. A good scientist is one who never stops asking why things happen, or how things happen. Science makes progress when we find data that contradicts our current scientific ideas.
Scientific inquiry includes three key areas:
1. Identifying a problem and asking questions about that problem
2. Selecting information to respond to the problem and evaluating it
3. Drawing conclusions from the evidence
Critical thinking can be developed through focussed learning activities. Students not only need to receive information but also benefit from being encouraged to think about and attach the information to their existing understanding. Inquiry does this effectively.
❤All learning is emotional.❤
When we are in a positive emotional state, we are more likely to be engaged, attentive, and motivated to learn. Positive emotions such as joy, interest, and curiosity can help us approach new tasks with enthusiasm and open-mindedness, which can lead to better learning outcomes.
On the other hand, negative emotions such as fear, anxiety, and frustration can hinder our ability to learn. These emotions can make us feel overwhelmed, distracted, and resistant to new information, which can lead to poor learning outcomes.
One way that emotions impact learning is through our physiological response. When we are in a heightened emotional state, our bodies become more aware, and this can affect our ability to process information. For example, if we are feeling anxious or stressed, our bodies may produce stress hormones, which can make it difficult for us to concentrate and remember new information.
Emotions can also impact learning through our cognitive processes. For example, if we are feeling happy and interested, we are more likely to engage in deep processing, which involves thinking critically about new information and making connections to our prior knowledge. On the other hand, if we are feeling negative emotions, we may engage in surface processing, which involves simply memorizing new information without fully understanding it.
Emotions can impact learning through our social interactions. When we are in a positive emotional state, we are more likely to be open to feedback and willing to collaborate with others, which can enhance our learning experiences. On the other hand, if we are feeling negative emotions, we may be more resistant to feedback and less likely to collaborate, which can hinder our learning.

Retired educator and consultant Skip Tyler is spreading the word that everyone is a math person. Skip sends “Everyone Is A MATH Person ” stickers to educators who request them to encourage them to change the story in their classrooms by asking, “Are you increasing student discourse? Implementing number sense routines? Using open-ended rich tasks? Using more small group instruction? Giving students choice in their learning?”
Creating an Environment Where All Students See That They Can Be Good at Math When teachers guide students to look beyond narrow metrics of success in math, more students will see their potential for learning.
