CODING AND ROBOTICS INAUGURAL PROVINCIAL BOOTCAMP

Theme: “Future Innovators: Coding the World of Tomorrow”

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education hosted the inaugural Coding and Robotics Provincial Boot-camp at the Anton Lembede School of Mathematics, Science and Technology (MST) Academy on 07 August 2026.
The programme brought together 100 Grade 7 and Grade 8 learners, alongside 36 educators and departmental officials, representing all 12 education districts across KwaZulu-Natal.

Under the theme “Future Innovators: Coding the World of Tomorrow,” the boot-camp aimed to equip learners with essential skills in coding, robotics, computational thinking and problem-solving, while exposing them to exciting opportunities within the technology and STEM sectors.
The programme marked an important step towards strengthening digital skills among young learners and encouraging them to explore STEM-related careers, innovation and technology from an early age.

The Principal of Anton Lembede MST Academy, Mr Dumisani Sibaya, officially opened the Coding and Robotics Provincial Boot-camp and warmly welcomed all learners, educators, departmental officials, staff and stakeholders to the Academy.
In his address, Mr. Sibaya encouraged participants to work together as one team, make the most of the learning opportunities presented during the boot-camp, and use the knowledge and skills gained to contribute positively to the future of education, innovation and technology in KwaZulu-Natal.

Ms. Sindi Zakuza-Njakazi, Director for Curriculum Management, highlighted the significance of the boot-camp in advancing technology and innovation within education.
She emphasized that coding and robotics provide learners with opportunities to develop critical 21st-century skills, including creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration and experimentation. These skills are essential in preparing young people for the rapidly changing world of work and the demands of the future.

Certificates of participation were presented to learners according to their respective districts, while learners who demonstrated outstanding performance in their projects were recognized and awarded trophies for their achievements.
These sessions provided educators with innovative tools and approaches that can be integrated into teaching and learning to enhance learner engagement and prepare classrooms for the digital future.

Mr. Mandla Tshabalala, Deputy Chief Education Specialist for Teacher Development, expressed his appreciation to all stakeholders who contributed to the success of the inaugural Coding and Robotics Provincial Boot-camp.

The future belongs to those who innovate, create and code it!
