Matric Results Are Released: We Celebrate, Then the System Abandons Our Youth.
Matric results are out. The celebrations are loud. But for many young people, the house is quiet. They passed matric and now they are sitting at home, unsure of what comes next, where to go, or who to ask for help.
As South Africa marks another matric results season, we celebrate top achievers and quietly overlook a growing majority of young people who passed but have no clear path forward.
After twelve years of schooling, many learners leave the system without understanding what careers exist. They do not know what they qualify for or how to navigate universities, TVET colleges, or other post-school options. They do not know how to access funding, and many are unaware of skills development programmes. Structure ends abruptly, yet life-defining decisions are expected immediately.
This is not a failure of young people. It is a systemic gap.
Parents are often just as confused, and career guidance remains inconsistent and under-resourced. The months after matric are a vulnerable period. Rejection, inactivity, and uncertainty can quickly lead to emotional distress. This makes post-matric support not just an education issue, but also a social and mental health concern.
University is not the only route to success. TVET colleges, occupational qualifications, learnerships, and short skills programmes are valid pathways. Unfortunately, learners are rarely guided through them properly.
Matric should not be the end of support. South Africa needs structured post-matric career navigation, clearer articulation pathways, and community-based youth support.
As a community, if we do nothing, we will continue to lose talent. This happens not because young people lack ability, but because they are left alone at the most critical transition point.
If you know a young person who is stuck, reach out. If you have information, mentorship, or opportunities, share them.
We cannot afford to lose our youth at this moment.
May 2023 brings all the blessings and success that you wish for.
