Two of our own are lining up on the world stage next weekend and it's going to be a big one.

The 2026 ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships kick off 9–11 October in La Vila Joiosa, Spain, and early word is this edition could be the largest in the event's history, over 750 paddlers from 36 countries are expected on the water.

Chloë Bunnett returns to defend her SS1 world title, racing for Spain after winning her category in Durban last year. Gene Prato pulls on New Zealand's black and white for the first time, taking on double duty in the Men's SS1 and the Mixed SS2 alongside Rebecca Cole, backing up a top-7 senior finish last year with a new flag on his boat.

From the ocean to the river.

📣 Calling all river paddlers📣 The Jock Claasens Memorial race (hosted by Crusaders Canoe Club ) is this Sunday 27 September. The perfect way to finish off your "long" weekend, 16km on the beautiful Upper Umgeni & the weather looks 👍. No better way to test those marathon skills before K1 nationals in November. Cherry on top is that there's going to be a shuttle service as well 🙌 and great fun after the race including plans in place to watch the Springboks versus Australia rugby match.

Congratulations to Gene Prato, crowned Open Men's national champion at the Tawhiti Rahi Coastal Challenge in Tutukaka this weekend.

It's a proper ocean crossing, 24km out to the Poor Knights Islands into 15 to 20kt winds. Not a race for the faint hearted, and Gene remained composed from start to finish. His second national title now.

The Dolphin Coast Challenge Final overall results. In the K2 doubles, Hank McGregor and Lee Furby take the overall win, their day one margin carrying them through even after finishing second today. Brent Chiazzari and Hamish Lovemore end up second overall, Oliver Burn and Luke Nisbet hold third both days and overall.

In the solo field, Warren Jacobs takes the overall win, with Nic Burden second and Jason Ekstrand third, the same three who anchored the top of that field across both days. Last Image - Results

In the singles field, Warren Jacobs , Nic Burden and Jason Ekstrand have held the top three across both days of the Dolphin Coast Challenge too, Warren moving up to the win today after finishing third yesterday.

Day two of the Dolphin Coast Challenge, the ocean eased off a little from yesterday's battering. Launching at Tiffanys Beach still put up a fight though, a few boats surrendering and calling it quits. Brent Chiazzari and Hamish Lovemore turned yesterday's second into today's win, Hank McGregor and Lee Furby swapped into second, and Oliver Burn and Luke Nisbet held their third from yesterday.

Day two of the Dolphin Coast Challenge starts tomorrow, and the swell is dropping. Organisers report it easing through the morning with a moderate northeast breeze to help paddlers along, a welcome change after today's grind.

Start batches: solo paddlers off at 10:00, the first double-ski batch at 10:05, the second at 10:10. Hank McGregor and Lee Furby, Brent Chiazzari and Hamish Lovemore, Oliver Burn and Luke Nisbet, and our own Linton Hope and Bruce Wenke all go off in the 10:10 batch.

T-shirts and paddle shorts are being handed out at Tiffany's car park from 8 to 9am, worth getting there early to beat the queue before racing starts.
