🎨🖌 The annual North Durban Schools' Art Exhibition 🎨🖌

The North Durban highlight of the ‘art cultural event’ of the year opened at Virginia Preparatory on Monday evening and what a spectacular splash of creativity.

Masterpieces from Grade R right through to Grade 7 were submitted by local schools under the theme ‘Aqua Vibes’, and it was certainly a wonderful ‘watery’ experience. From oceans, rivers, underwater worlds and everything in between.

There were plenty of oohs and ahhs as the skills of your artists were admired. Their art teachers creativity, imagination and talent is impressive. The ability to share and inspire the children, turning blank paper into masterpieces is a skill in itself.

Albert Einstein famously said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” While some might disagree, there can be little doubt that imagination is at the very heart of creativity. It is the engine that allows us to dream, explore, experiment and there was certainly no shortage of it filling Virginia’s hall.

Every artwork told its own little story, and every pupil and teacher involved has every right to stand back, look at their work and feel incredibly proud.

A huge congratulations to all our pupils whose art was sent, and then selected for display, and to all our neighbouring schools to their talented young artists too. And to all the dedicated art teachers and schools who continue to encourage our children to pick up a paintbrush, think outside the box and, most importantly, imagine.

Don’t miss out in seeing it for yourself. Virginia Preparatory School’s hall is open until 12h00 on Saturday, 22 August 2026 still giving you time to stop by to admire for yourself.

Cross Country🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

On Friday, our Cross Country runners travelled to Umhlali Preparatory School for their third Cross Country meet.

Well done to all our runners who gave it their best on a glorious winter’s day.

Hockey🏑

On Saturday, our hockey teams played fixtures against Ashton College.

Our teams enjoyed the highly competitive games and had to work hard to maintain their energy levels throughout. It was a great opportunity to test themselves and enjoy some quality hockey.

This Friday our Senior Choir is teaming up with the KZN Philharmonic for a very special performance which we are so excited about!

Chad Hendricks will be conducting the KZN Philharmonic with our Chelsea choir, and past pupil, Emma Northend will be also performing a solo.

There are still a few tickets available for Friday’s performance, so get booking as soon as possible to avoid disappointment!

Booking is essential! Seating is very limited due to the available space.

Bottle Cap Recycling Challenge ♻️

Our Junior Primary recently took part in a bottle cap recycling challenge, and our pupils certainly rose to the occasion.

Hockey🏑

Our U10A girls took part in the Our Lady of Fatima Tournament on Saturday.

They played extremely well, worked hard and showed great sportsmanship both on and off the field. We are so proud of their effort and attitude.

Reptile Creators in Action. 🐍🐢🐊🦎

This term, grade 2 are going wild for reptiles.

Our Grade 2 pupils worked together in teams to create different body parts of a reptile. Once everyone had completed their part, the teams came back together to combine their creations and bring their very own imaginary reptile to life.

A wonderful activity encouraging teamwork, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

Some very interesting reptiles made an appearance.

Art Sparks 🎨

At ‘Art Sparks’ this past weekend, it was time for Mrs Wagner and three members of the Art Teachers Cell, from Northlands Primary School, Clifton School and Durban Preparatory High School, to share their passion for art and, of course, teaching.

Co-ordinated and sponsored by Bits & Pieces, ‘Art Sparks’ is a workshop designed to inspire creativity and provide fresh ideas for art teachers to take into their classrooms.

Mrs Wagner and her colleagues ran four mini creative workshops, providing lesson plans, materials and, most importantly, ‘the how’. And, as experience is the best teacher, they got to do the lessons themselves.

Now in its third year, ‘Art Sparks’ was very well attended, with teachers travelling from as far as Tongaat and Pietermaritzburg to Clifton School, who kindly hosted the event.

A wonderful day of creativity, learning and sharing ideas.

Hockey 🏑

The U11A and U13A Boy hockey teams had a fantastic weekend at the Maritzburg College Hockey Festival.

It was an amazing opportunity for our players to compete against schools we don’t normally play, and both teams represented the school exceptionally well.

Congratulations to all the players and coaches on their performances, and a special thank you to our parents for their fantastic support throughout the weekend. It was a hugely successful festival.

Many thanks to Maritzburg College for hosting us, and to all the schools we played for providing such strong opposition and demonstrating excellent sportsmanship.

Our U11A team took part in the Durban Girls' College U11 Hockey Tournament, and what a fantastic tournament it was!

The girls played five games, scoring an incredible 21 goals and conceding just two. An outstanding team effort from start to finish.

Well done, girls! We are so proud of you.
