Promoting Inclusive Agriculture: Empowering Persons with Disabilities for Food Security and Sustainable Livelihoods
The event brought together government representatives, disability organisations, agricultural stakeholders and delegates to explore practical ways of making agriculture more accessible and inclusive.
Key highlights
• Opening and welcome: Ms Simphiwe, Programme Director, and Ms Matebogo Victoria of VoiceOut Deaf.
• Accessibility and inclusion: Blind SA highlighted accessibility for people with visual impairments; Deaf SA addressed sign language and participation in agricultural spaces; Wheel of Change focused on mobility solutions and pathways for farmers with physical disabilities.
• Government leadership: Ms Vuyisa Ramokgopa, MEC for Economic Development, Agriculture and Rural Development, addressed transforming agriculture through inclusive growth and partnerships.
• Practical demonstrations: VoiceOut Deaf and exhibitors showcased adaptive farming equipment, ergonomic tools, raised beds and accessible technology, including live demonstrations involving persons with disabilities.
• Stakeholder panel: Mr Senzo Mbonambi facilitated a discussion with representatives from UNISA, Land Bank, Enza Zaden and TMP (Thabo Makama & Partners).
• Closing remarks: Ms Andisa Jazz, Head of Department at GDARD. The vote of thanks was delivered by Ms Sengo Seneka, VoiceOut Deaf representative.

Inclusive agriculture creates opportunities for people with disabilities to develop practical farming skills, produce food, generate income and build independent livelihoods. Accessible equipment, inclusive training and supportive partnerships can help remove barriers to participation and strengthen food security in communities.

The inception of the Disability Indaba was meant to disrupt the status quo. Founded by LeadChange Developments in partnership with Wits University, Phila Sonke and Utho Ngathi Disability Projects, the Indaba was conceived as a clear wake-up call to persons with disabilities, disability-focused organizations, and critical stakeholders—including employers, business funders, and community leaders. The underlying message was simple yet unyielding: we cannot allow the disabled community to go unnoticed, unheard, or unsupported.

The 2026 Disability Indaba marked a significant milestone in this partnership. Hosting the event within the academic and intellectual hub of Wits University provided the platform with the institutional weight needed to drive national conversation.

The caliber of leadership present at the 2026 gathering underscored the growing national significance of the Disability Indaba:

The event was officially opened by Prof. Samuel Ravengai, Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at Wits University. His welcome established a firm commitment to leveraging higher education, research, and institutional space to champion disability inclusion and equitable opportunities.

The Indaba was honored to host Ms. Mmapaseka Steve Letsike, Deputy Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities, who served as the event's guest speaker. Her address underscored the national imperative of integrating disability rights into the highest levels of governance, policy, and public resource allocation.

Cllr. Yongama Zigebe, whose participation highlighted the crucial role of local government and municipal leadership in implementing accessible infrastructure, services, and local economic development for all citizens.

While previous years focused on elevating stories and identifying systemic bottlenecks, the core theme of the 2026 Disability Indaba was "Actionable Outcomes."

As LeadChange Developments and its partners review the findings, commitments, and strategic frameworks emerging from the 2026 Indaba, the focus shifts entirely from dialogue to ex*****on.

The gathering served as a reminder that holding an event is not the destination; it is the launchpad. Providing tangible, measurable results to the disabled community remains the true benchmark of success.

To every stakeholder (Sage, Services Seta, MICT Seta, Jobs Fund, FNB, Dept of Labour, Clover), partner, guest, and participant who joined hands with LeadChange Developments and the Wits Faculty of Humanities at this year's summit: thank you for stepping up, listening, and taking accountability.
The movement toward complete inclusion, economic empowerment, and dignity for persons with disabilities moves forward.

We are proud to have successfully attended the 2026 Disability Indaba at Wits University, which was a resounding success.
The Indaba, held at Wits University Braamfontein (Flower Hall, West Campus) on 29 September 2026 under the theme “Beyond qualifications: unlocking potential and advancing inclusion,” was hosted in collaboration with Lead Change Developments, Wits Occupational Therapy, Phila Sonke, and the Wits School of Human and Community Development.
The proceedings were led by our Programme Directors, Mr. Senzo Mbonambi and Mr. Shaun Soko, with the official opening address delivered by Prof. Samuel Ravengai, Assistant Dean, Faculty of Humanities.
The programme featured a powerful panel discussion on “Disability and Education: Leaving No One Behind” facilitated by Dr. Leila Abdool Gafoor, Ms. Subhashini Ellen, and Ms. Felani Mavundla.
The Indaba unpacked critical themes including:
• Breaking Barriers: Building Inclusive Communities, Employment, Entrepreneurship and Economic Empowerment
• Bridging the Gap: The Role of SETAs in Creating Inclusive Pathways from Skills Development to Empowerment for Persons with Disabilities
• Skills Demand and Accessibility
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Zintle Ntshongwana.

On 12 September 2026, our Cerebral Palsy (CP) Football Team delivered an outstanding performance, defeating Ezibeleni 4–0 in their 3rd CP League match at Ezibeleni Sports Ground.

Strategic Partnership & Launch
Lead Change Developments' Dobsonville & Protea South Branch has officially commenced a strategic collaboration with the National Youth Service (GME - Charisma Music Foundation) to launch an inclusive, work-readiness initiative tailored for individuals with diverse abilities for a six-month duration. The initiative will be hosted across different workstations, including Sports, Agriculture/Farming, Computer and ICDL training🙂.
