I am a speechie and Certifiied Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist with IDA. I am also a Hanen member (certified to lead It Takes Two to Talk) so I am passionate about helping kiddos read better, and helping mommies/teachers prepare kiddos and teach reading better.

Read to your kiddo AND get her high quality instruction into how to read. Both are necessary.

We encourage parents, children and families to read aloud together! But doing this is not a substitute for systematic, evidence-based reading instruction. Please do not assume that struggling readers were not read to at home! It is often not true. Remember that the most fundamental job of schools is to teach children to read.

It does not teach your child decoding, but it certainly improves listening comprehension. Both are needed for reading.
