Update on flooding and school attendance

Dear Parents, guardians and Learners

We have been working with Public Works to drain the water from the school yard. Two furrows have been opened and hopefully the water will subside overnight.

Please note the following plan for tomorrow:

1. Learners must come to school as they normally would.
2. Upon arrival, school management will assess whether the yard is safe.
3. If the water has not fully drained and conditions are unsafe, learners will not be allowed to stay. They will be returned home immediately, and we will consult with department authorities for further direction.

No learner or staff member will be placed in danger. We ask parents to be on standby in case early pick-up becomes necessary.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Regards

Urgent Update: School Flooding & Arrangements for Grade 12 Learners

Dear Parents and Guardians

I am updating on the flooding issue at the school, which has affected several key areas of the building. The safety of our learners and staff is our top priority, so we acted immediately to assess the situation for today and take necessary precautions.

Grades 8–11

After consulting with the relevant authorities, we made the decision to send home all learners in Grades 8, 9, 10, and 11. These learners have been released and are making their way home. Please confirm receipt of this message with your child and ensure they are safely at home. We will communicate further information about the resumption of classes for these grades once the school has been assessed and cleaned.

Grade 12 Learners

We understand the urgency of minimising disruption to our matric learners. While the main school is inaccessible today, we are actively seeking alternative space at a nearby church and a local primary school to hold today’s scheduled classes for Grade 12s only.

We will send a follow-up message within the next two hours confirming whether a venue has been secured and providing the address and start time. Please instruct your Grade 12 child to be on standby and ready to travel if a venue is confirmed. We appreciate your patience and flexibility as we work through this unexpected challenge.

Next Steps

Β· The school will be closed for all other activities today.
Β· We are working with the municipality and our maintenance team to dry out and repair the affected areas.
Β· A further update regarding classes for the rest of the week will be sent by around 16:00 today.

For urgent enquiries, please contact the school office on 0788203513, We deeply regret the disruption and thank you for your understanding.

Yours

Deputy Principal

Incident Report: Flooding at Refentse Secondary School (Delareyville)

Following the heavy rainfall on Thursday, the Refentse Secondary School site remains severely waterlogged. Runoff water accumulated around the mobile classrooms, making the premises currently inaccessible operations.

Despite the site conditions, weekend classes proceeded without interruption. Learners were accommodated at the adjacent Retleagile Primary School.

Due to the persistent standing water and safety concerns, formal classes at Refentse Secondary will be suspended on Monday, 4 May.

We are engaging the municipality to excavate channels/furrows to redirect the flow of water away from the school structures.

The District Office will continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure the environment is safe for the return of learners and staff.
