Before taking your child to see a "play therapist" please do some checking to see if the individual is a qualified Psychologist who is registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

There are a couple of institutions that are offering training to be a "play therapist". These courses aren't recognized by the HPCSA and have absolutely no selection criteria when it comes to selecting candidates. Literally anyone can do these courses.

According to the Health Professions Act (Act 56 of 1974) play therapy is seen as a psychological act and only properly trained, registered psychologists are legally able to perform psychological acts. It's a criminal offense to perform any psychological acts without being registered with the HPCSA.
