Yesterday, I wrote a blog about a year ago today, but mostly about 17.12.24.

Many moons ago.
Been on so many adventures since then. 🄰🐸

I wrote one blog post a day for a month. Some are about my life, some are poems, and some are just about lessons in love and life. This one is a poem that I didn't mean to write, and was formed upside down. https://relativelyperfect.substack.com/p/dear-whelmily-1809

How's September treating you so far?

I am so excited for Spring, in fact I'm Springing into September with my Sardientjies...

I have only attended 2 weddings in my adult life, one that was pretty traditional and the other was a weekend wedding celebration.

A few months ago, one of my soul friends (you know those friends who must have known your heart in a few previous lifetimes) invited me to her wedding.

I am so freaking excited!! I even wrote a blog post about it 🄰🤩

10 days ago I promised myself I’d take this social media thing seriously—at least one post on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Should be easy, right? Yeah… nah. Mother Nature had a few life lessons in store for us!

I probably won’t get to that blog post for my birthday, and I sincerely apologize for all the messages I’ve ignored. The good news: she’s coming out of the hospital today! Thank you for all the love, support, and messages. We’re so fortunate to have enough food, flexible schedules, sick leave, and the dearest Whelmily. ā¤ļø (edit to update, she has to stay in hospital another night 😭)

PS: For my birthday this year, I’ll be shaving off all my hair and giving up all my vices for a year. Details and updates to follow… but feel free to ask me why in the comments, and I’ll do my best to explain.

Also, here’s a 2008-style album with proof of life, captioned for context.

Two years ago I arrived in Bahrain to my shiny new teaching job after leaving the perfect life in Korea in search of "ambition for success". I got schooled.

(watch the video for a bit more info 🪼)

I miss so many things about both those countries. I learned so many lessons, and now I want to put them into practice. As with everything in life, there's so much room for improvement in the education system. I might not have the answers yet, but for now I'm focusing on teaching one lesson at a time. 🐲

I'll always be looking for a teaching moment, whether it's teaching a kid how to tie his shoes or teaching an adult how to chop an onion.

I'm so grateful for realizing I had made a mistake and swallowing my pride to admit I took on more than I was ready for. I needed to go through that to get to where I am today. There's a rough road ahead, but I'm strapped in tight and ready to find out where this rollercoaster is taking me 🌸

If there's one lesson I can teach you today? Spend some time sitting with yourself. Your experiences. Be grateful for the hard lessons that came your way, because DAMN GIRL, look at you now!

For a few months last year, I had my dream classroom.

No fancy tech or desks, just some old chairs and supplies that were donated by parents, a bag full of cardboard boxes we used to build robots, and a few of my own toys from my childhood.

The Whelm Burrow was a space where kids came to do homework, and stayed to play with the friends they wouldn't have even talked to if it wasn't for the Burrow. A few kids even overcame their fear of heights because they also wanted to do homework in the tree house!

These kids have no idea how much they inspired me. There were days when I was still wiping away tears as they came from school they ran to hug me. Every time I got bad news about Whelma, they showed me that there was always hope. When they had a bad day, I learned how to talk to them without disregarding their childish fears - a skill that has transcended all ages.

I can't help but be a little sad when I look at photos of my babies at the Burrow. I miss them every day, I miss seeing them overcome their fears and learn about so much more than homework.

While the physical Burrow is on pause for now, I’m dreaming into what a Whelm(On) Burrow might become — an online version, hopefully launching before the end of the year šŸ‘€
I’m not sure what it’ll look like yet, but I’m still carrying every abstract art lesson, tummy laugh, and sticky hug with me 🌸

That’s it. That’s the end of Whelma.

A year ago I wanted to buy a car.
Instead, I paid R120 000 to drive less than 200km in an old ambulance with a ceramic toilet and an awning that I never used.

I named it the Whelmbulance, and soon she got the nickname Whelma (Dankies Trens) as her personality started showing.
If you ever met her, you’d know; she always had my back.
She was the best mistake I’ve ever made.

I bought my dream before it had a chance to form -
to drive across Southern Africa, gradually turning this van into a travelling classroom.
To help kids whose parents can’t afford supplementary education.
To provide sanctuary at events for the overwhelmed.
To prove that purpose matters more than profit.

I found her on Facebook Marketplace (first mistake, I know).
I believed a straight, white, Afrikaans man who told me he’d never let a girl like me drive a van that would break down on her trips across Africa — instead of listening to my gut.

What I saw was a beautiful bus I could call home, classroom, camper, future.
What I got was breakdowns. Literally and emotionally.
And still — I would do it all again in a heartbeat.

This isn’t a eulogy.
But I can’t begin to explain how grateful I am to the people who supported this dream, even though it was destined to fail.
The ones who hugged me and calmed me down when I cried from anger, joy, heartbreak, pride, guilt, and relief.
I whelm you.

There are many reasons why I share my stories.
But here’s the short of it:
I gave up on Whelma after a year.
I’m not giving up on Whelma 2.0.

And I’m going to need support in ways I can’t even predict yet.
