PROGRESSIVE STUDENT MOVEMENT WELCOMES THE APPOINTMENT OF BASIC EDUCATION MINISTER SIVIWE GWARUBE

Progressive Student Movement notes and welcomes the appointment of Siviwe Gwarube as the minister of basic education.

PSM which is one of the largest learner formation in the country believes that new energy was needed in the sector and the deployment of Minister Gwarube will bring new ideas and much needed energy.

As the Champions of learners struggles we have always called for transformation in the basic education sector and have called for the removal of minister Angie Motshekga who has presided over the sector for over a decade while learners and teachers in rural and township schools remained underprivileged and less prioritized.

Our endorsement of minister Gwarube shouldn't be confused with approval of the promotion of neo liberal policies.

We further caution minister Gwarube against enforcing policies that are a norm in her party of prioritizing the privileged over the marginalized.

PSM national executive committee will keep a close eye of the attitude and performance of minister Gwarube and we will respond harshly if she resorts into anti-poor policies.

Progressive student movement questions the handling of political leaders concerning the killings of pupils in Soshanguve.

The past few weeks we’ve seen an increase in homicides in the Soshanguve area, most notably ones that involves minors and pupils.

We are all mortified and still shocked by the senseless murder of the 5 year old Ditebogo Jnr Phalane and we commend the swift action by the state on the issue.

We also would like to appreciate the support that the family received in light-of this unfortunate incident in ensuring that the family finds peace and solace.

Losing a young one is a pain that may or may not subside, it’s a wound that leaves a gaping hole in all of us and not just the immediate family.

We have thus learnt of a double murder in the same area of Soshanguve just before the elections.

We would like to encourage the police department aswell as public officials to treat this matter with the same level of concern as this might just expose a rot in our society that might fester to uncontrollable proportions.

Let this not be one of those cases that suffocates and receives less attention courtesy of it happening mid a political frenzy ie the elections.

We would lastly like to convey our deepest condolences to the families and respective friends of the deceased. We urge the communities to also participate actively in ensuring that this issue becomes resolved.
