Being at the children’s level matters.

In a toddler environment, standing immediately raises the energy of the room. Our size alone shifts the dynamic and can unintentionally create distance unless we are intentionally observing. We want to be at the children’s level—connected, calm, and engaged.

At the same time, sitting directly on the floor all day can root us in place. It invites children into our laps more frequently and can slow our ability to respond quickly when the room needs us.

Short stools or firm yoga cushions create a thoughtful balance. They allow us to remain at the children’s level while staying mobile, responsive, and fully present. It is a small adjustment that can significantly support both connection and flow in the environment.

What are your thoughts? Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath—neuroscientist and former classroom teacher—has been sounding an alarm few want to hear:

Screens in schools are reshaping how children think.

Decades of research, dating back to the 1960s, show that heavy screen-based learning weakens deep reading, working memory, attention span, and the ability to transfer knowledge. The result? On average, Gen Z shows lower capacity for sustained focus, comprehension, and abstract reasoning than their parents had at the same age.

And instead of addressing the problem, many education systems are doing something far more concerning:

They’re lowering the standard.

Reading comprehension used to mean:
• Reading full passages
• Holding multiple ideas at once
• Answering layered, inferential questions

Now it often means:
• Reading a single sentence
• Answering one surface-level fact

That isn’t innovation.
It’s redefining success to accommodate decline.

The human brain did not evolve to learn primarily from screens.
It evolved through language, stories, physical interaction, challenge, and sustained attention.

That’s one of the reasons we love homeschooling.
It allows us to take control of our children’s education—protecting deep learning, attention, and curiosity instead of outsourcing it to devices.

If we want to raise capable, thoughtful, resilient adults, childhood learning can’t be handed over to screens.

I used to be the one chasing tiny feet through the house…picking up toys, wiping faces, and saying, “Just five more minutes.”
Back then, I thought the noise would never end—
the chaos, the clutter, the constant questions.
But it did.
It slowed down.
And somehow, in the quiet that followed,
my heart learned how much I’d miss it.

Now I watch my children live the same chapters I once did.
I see myself in their tired eyes and their gentle smiles.
I hear echoes of my own voice when they say,
“Come on, it’s bedtime,”
or when they whisper prayers over little heads.

And then there are the grandbabies—
oh, the grandbabies.
The ones who bring the noise back,
but this time, it sounds sweeter.
The laughter feels deeper.
The moments feel slower.
Because now I know—
these are the days you never get back.

I hold them, and it’s like time folds in on itself.
I see my babies, their babies, and every bit of love in between.
The same hands that once rocked the cradle
now trace wrinkles earned from years of love.
And I realize that maybe this is what legacy really means—
not what we leave behind,
but who we leave it in.

I pray they always know how loved they are,
that every story, every scar, every sacrifice
was just love in another form.
And when they look back someday,
I hope they see a grandparent who slowed down,
who listened,
who showed them what matters most.

Because the years go faster than they should,
but love—
love just keeps on going.
From one generation to the next,
like a thread God Himself wove through time.
And somehow, I get to be part of it.
A living link between what was and what’s to come.

And oh, what a beautiful circle that is. 🤍

“Children bloom when they’re seen. Genuine appreciation, spoken aloud, becomes the sunlight their confidence grows under.” ✨💚
