Have you ever wondered how a tiny egg becomes a moth?

Over the next 5 weeks, we’ll follow the incredible journey of the silkworm — from tiny egg, to hungry caterpillar, to silk-making expert, and finally to an adult moth!

⏰ HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

Under good conditions, the complete life cycle from egg to adult moth takes around 6–8 weeks, depending on temperature, food and other conditions.

🥚 WEEK 1 – IT ALL STARTS WITH AN EGG

🥚 WHERE THE JOURNEY BEGINS

Every silkworm starts its life as a tiny egg.

Female silk moths can lay hundreds of eggs, which remain inactive until the conditions are right for development and hatching.

⏰ EGG STAGE: approximately 7–14 days

When the baby silkworm is ready, it hatches from the egg. This tiny creature is called a larva or caterpillar.

And its first mission?

🌿 FIND FOOD!

Baby silkworms are incredibly small when they hatch, but they won't stay that way for long!

👉 FUN FACT: A silkworm egg is only around 1–1.5 mm across — about the size of a tiny speck!

What Do Earthworms Eat?

Earthworms don't eat fresh leaves or living plants. Instead, they feed on decaying organic matter such as fallen leaves, compost and microorganisms living within it.

Food passes through the mouth into the crop for storage and then into the muscular gizzard, where tiny grains of sand help grind it into smaller pieces before digestion.

The result is nutrient-rich worm castings—one of the best natural soil conditioners available.

Earthworms don't have teeth—their gizzard does all the grinding.

How Earthworms Move

Earthworms don't have legs, yet they are excellent diggers.

They move using two sets of muscles—one stretches the body while the other shortens it. Tiny bristles called setae grip the soil, allowing the worm to pull itself forward through tunnels.

These tunnels improve soil aeration, drainage and root growth, making it easier for plants to thrive.

💡 Did You Know?

Earthworms cannot crawl across smooth glass because their tiny bristles have nothing to grip.

🌿 Garden Tip: Avoid compacting your soil, as loose soil allows worms to move and work more effectively.

How to Change Your Soil pH Naturally

Now that you know your pH, what can you do?

🌿 If Your Soil Is Too Acidic (Low pH)
You can slowly raise the pH by adding:
✔ Agricultural Lime
✔ Dolomitic Lime (also adds magnesium)

These should be worked into the soil several weeks before planting.

🌿 If Your Soil Is Too Alkaline (High pH)
Lowering pH takes time.
Gardeners commonly use:
✔ Elemental sulphur
✔ Acid-forming fertilisers (where appropriate)
✔ Organic matter such as compost to improve overall soil health

Always make gradual adjustments—large, sudden changes can stress plants.

Reproduction & Life History

Did you know that every earthworm has both male and female reproductive organs?

Earthworms are hermaphrodites, but they still need a partner to reproduce. During mating, two worms exchange s***m before each produces small lemon-shaped cocoons.

Inside each cocoon, baby worms develop until they hatch several weeks later. They emerge looking like tiny versions of the adults—there is no larval stage.

When conditions are ideal, with plenty of moisture, food and comfortable temperatures, worm populations can grow surprisingly quickly.

💡 Did You Know?
One healthy compost worm can produce dozens of cocoons every year.

🌿 Garden Tip: Keeping your worm farm moist and well-fed encourages reproduction.
