How fast should my child be reading for their age? ⏱️📖
There is no single reading speed that every child should reach at a specific age. Reading development differs according to a child’s grade, experience, language background and the difficulty of the text.
Speed is also only one part of successful reading. A child should be able to read accurately, fluently and with understanding—not simply race through the words.
Instead of focusing on one number, look for steady progress:
• Is reading becoming smoother and more natural?
• Is your child recognising more words easily?
• Can they explain what they have read?
• Are they reading with appropriate expression?
The goal is not just faster reading—it is confident reading with comprehension.
