It is AWFUL to see a child in the throes of anxiety, panic or terror. AWFUL. As attachment figures we want our littles to be safe, which unfortunately means that their heightened fear states activate a panic inside of us. This heightened fear response inside of us is only helpful IF our children are in fact in the throes of danger. Because then our adrenaline will lead us to take action to keep them safe. But what about when our children ARE safe, but just don't FEEL safe? Well then our adrenaline response actually gets in the way of the calm support they are needing from us. The more panicked you are about your child's panic, the less effective you will be in co-regulating them and in helping them effectively process their fear. I want you to feel confident that you can handle your child's panic. I really believe you can. The 4 steps to doing this effectively go like this: 1. Keep Calm/Calm yourself 2. Honor the Fear by giving it air time to be fully heard and understood 3. Comfort and co-regulate 4. Offer reassurance Lots of people try to do it in opposite order and get stuck. Hope this helps in those inevitable moments where some big scary thought is bullying your little one.
