The National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT), in collaboration with the Department of Basic Education and key education stakeholders, participated in the two-day Mathematics, Science and Technology (MST) Conditional Grant Inter-Provincial Seminar. The seminar provided an important platform for Provincial Education Departments, MST Directors and Coordinators, and strategic partners to reflect on implementation progress, share best practices, and strengthen the delivery of MST education across all nine provinces.

Day 2 extended these engagements beyond the seminar venue and into schools, offering delegates the opportunity to observe firsthand the impact of MST interventions at school level. Through meaningful discussions and school visits, participants exchanged insights on effective resource utilisation, learner support, educator development, community involvement, and innovative approaches that contribute to improved learning outcomes.

The seminar reaffirmed a collective commitment to advancing quality Mathematics, Science and Technology education and equipping learners with the skills and competencies needed to contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s future growth and development.

NECT Supporting Collaborative Digital Transformation in South African Schools | SA-SAMS Modernisation Test Pilot

As the week-long SA-SAMS Modernisation test pilot concluded in Heidelberg from 4–8 May 2026, school leadership and Change Champions from Laerskool Volkskool Heidelberg, Heidelberg Public School, and Sithokomele Primary School reflected on the implementation experience and lessons emerging from the combined multi-school pilot.

The overall sentiment from schools was positive and encouraging, with participants acknowledging the potential of the modernised SA-SAMS system to strengthen school administration and improve operational efficiency.

One particularly important reflection came from the Principal of Sithokomele Primary School, who shared that the school had already started exploring ways of acquiring laptops for educators as part of preparing for digital adoption within the school environment.

What makes this especially significant is the reality that many public schools across South Africa continue to operate under severe financial and resource constraints. Despite these challenges, schools continue to demonstrate willingness to participate, adapt, and prepare for digital transformation where support and partnership exist.

The Heidelberg experience continues to show the importance of collaboration, practical support, stakeholder engagement, and ongoing capacity building in strengthening sustainable digital transformation within schools.

The early lessons emerging from Heidelberg are encouraging signs that, through collective effort and partnership, schools are ready to move forward with modernised digital administration that supports improved teaching, learning, and school management outcomes.

Less Time on Administration, More Time for Learning: The Power of Collaboration in Education

The National Education Collaboration Trust continues to collaborate with the sector to improve systemic interventions in education through, among other initiatives, the SA-SAMS Modernisation Project.

In the ongoing test pilot of the modernised SA-SAMS at the first pioneer school, Meyerton Primary School, an educator using the new learner attendance functionality found the process simple, intuitive, and completed attendance capture in under a minute.

At face value, it is a small efficiency gain. At system level, it means more teaching time, improved learner engagement, and reduced administrative pressure on educators.

For partners committed to strengthening South Africa’s education outcomes, this is the kind of progress that matters—practical solutions that improve school functionality, support educators, and enhance learning environments.

Less admin. More teaching. Better outcomes.

The National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT) participated in the 5th Human Resource Development Council (HRDC) Summit, alongside key stakeholders committed to advancing South Africa’s human capital development agenda.

NECT CEO Dr. Godwin Khosa joined sector leaders Mr Mahlubi “Chief” Mabizela (Universities South Africa), and Dr. Botshabelo Maja (National School of Government) in contributing to the national dialogue.

Convened under the theme “Living and Working in a Changing World”, the summit underscored a critical inflection point for the country - one where education, skills development, and state capability must converge to respond to a rapidly evolving global context.

The discussions reaffirmed a shared national priority: that human resource development is foundational to inclusive growth, social justice, and long-term economic resilience.

Three priorities emerged as central to driving systemic transformation:

• Building strong foundations for learning

• Developing skills for a transformed economy and society

• Strengthening a capable and developmental state

These priorities speak directly to the core of NECT’s work. Our focus on systemic implementation support is centred on closing the gap between policy intent and tangible outcomes — ensuring that collaboration across government, business, labour, and civil society translates into measurable impact.

As the sector moves forward, the emphasis must remain on sustained coordinated implementation, translating dialogue into delivery, and strategy into meaningful change within classrooms, districts, and communities.
