Vanoggend op pad werk toe stop ek by ’n robot. ’n Man loop verby my kar
en soos hy verby die karre stap, groet hy elke bestuurder. Met ’n groot glimlag op sy gesig. My eerste gedagte? “Ag nee

Absoluut niks!

Inteendeel
dalk maak dit jĂłĂș dag ’n bietjie beter. Dalk maak dit iemand anders se dag ’n bietjie ligter.

Sommer net....

So, my challenge vir jou vandag:
⭐ Groet iemand wanneer jy in die ry staan en wag om vir jou brood te betaal.
⭐ Glimlag vir 'n vreemdeling.
⭐ SĂȘ iets mooi vir iemand met wie jy min praat.
⭐ Doen iets kleins wat iemand se dag kan ligter maak.

Want dalk is vriendelikheid nie altyd ’n groot gebaar nie. Dalk is dit net ’n glimlag by ’n robot.

En volgende keer
 gaan ek terug glimlag.

I recently listened to a podcast from Mel Robbins that stopped me in my tracks.
It spoke about something many of us quietly struggle with: Feeling guilty when we rest.
Parents keep going. Teachers keep going. People caring for their own parents keep going. Women especially can feel like we should just keep going: work, children, family, responsibilities
and then somewhere at the bottom of the list: ourselves.

But here’s the reminder I needed:
Caregivers need care too. And caring for yourself doesn’t have to mean booking a spa day or taking a whole weekend off.
Sometimes, it starts much smaller.
☕ Sit down and actually drink your coffee while it’s hot.
💧 Drink some water every hour.
🍎 Sit down and eat instead of eating while you work.
These little moments matter.

And maybe we need some new rules for ourselves
Not rules about how we should behave around other people. Rules that protect our own wellbeing.
✹ “I will take a lunch break.”
✹ “I will drink water during my busy day.”
✹ “I am allowed to say no when I have reached my limit.”
✹ “Rest is not something I have to earn.”
✹ “I will speak to myself with the same kindness I give to others.”

Because self-care isn't selfish.
And self-compassion isn't weakness.

In fact, our children are watching how we care for ourselves too.
When we prioritise healthy habits, take breaks and acknowledge that we have limits, we are modelling something incredibly important: You matter too.

And when life feels like there are a hundred things completely outside of your control, start with one small thing that is within your control. Because you cannot keep pouring from an empty cup.

We all carry worries, but sometimes we carry worries that were never ours to hold.

A Huge Bag of Worries is a wonderful book for primary school children. It gently shows how worries can grow bigger the longer we keep them inside, and reminds children that they don't have to carry them alone.

A beautiful conversation starter for parents and teachers to help children name their worries and ask for support.

Recently, I went on a long walk with friends and noticed something interesting. Sometimes I had to speed up to keep pace with others, and other times I slowed down so someone else could catch up.

It made me think about our children. Every day they're expected to keep up with homework, tests, projects, sports, and so much more. Before they know it, the day is over, and the cycle begins again.

As adults, we often live at the same pace. But in the rush to keep up, we can forget that children need more than opportunities to achieve—they also need opportunities to simply be.

Research shows that play, rest and meaningful connection are essential for healthy brain development, emotional regulation and resilience.

This week, perhaps we can ask not only, "What still needs to be done?" but also, "What can we slow down for today?"
Sometimes the greatest gift we can give our children is reminding them that it's okay to slow down.

One of my favourite books to read with children who have lost a loved one is The Invisible String. 💛

It gently reminds children that even when someone is no longer with us, love never disappears. The story uses the beautiful idea of an invisible string connecting us to the people we love. Whenever we miss them, we can imagine giving the string a little tug, and in our hearts, they tug right back.

A comforting story that opens the door to conversations about grief, love, and lasting connection.

As you prepare going "back to school" tomorrow after the winter holiday, I want to leave every teacher and every parent with a thought.

Teachers didn't choose this profession simply to teach children how to read, write and calculate. They chose it because they believe in children. They see potential where others see mistakes, and they choose, every single day, to help children become the best version of themselves.

Yes, teachers teach reading.
Yes, they teach maths.
But they also teach life.

They teach resilience.
"That didn't work. Let's try another way."

They teach hope.
"One difficult test doesn't define who you are. What can we learn from this?"

They teach courage.
"It's okay to make mistakes. That's how we grow."

They teach emotional awareness.
"You're feeling sad? That's okay. Let's talk about it."

They teach kindness, patience and empathy.

They teach children how to solve conflict.
"Did you tell your friend how that made you feel?"

They celebrate the quiet child finding their voice, the struggling learner finally understanding a concept, the anxious child walking into class with confidence, and the child who simply needed someone to believe in them.

Every day, teachers plant seeds they may never see grow.

So as we head into the second half of the school year, let's remember that education is about so much more than marks on a report card.

To every teacher returning to the classroom tomorrow: thank you for the lessons that will never appear on a test.

And to every parent: thank you for trusting teachers with one of the most important jobs in the world. The greatest impact happens when home and school work together. đŸ€

Mandela Day reminds us that changing the world doesn't always happen through grand gestures.

It begins in the small, everyday moments in our homes, classrooms, and playrooms.
One child. One conversation. One moment of connection.

Because the way we love, listen to, and care for our children today, shapes the world they'll help create tomorrow.

Happy Mandela Day!
