Distiller’s Tip
In rum and whiskey runs, patience is everything. Rushing your cuts can smear flavours and ruin your batch. Use smell, taste, and temperature — not just the clock — to find the perfect hearts.
Trust your senses, they’re your best tools.

Historic Spirits: The Royal Navy Rum Ration
For over 300 years, the Royal Navy kept morale (and courage) afloat with a daily serving of rum — affectionately known as “the daily tot.” Introduced in 1655 after capturing Jamaica, it became a tradition as essential as the ship’s compass.
At first, sailors received a hefty half-pint (284ml) of rum per day, but too much “liquid courage” wasn’t always the safest idea at sea. In 1740, Admiral Edward Vernon ordered it to be diluted with water.
This daily tradition carried on until 31 July 1970 — a day forever remembered as Black Tot Day. When the final rum was poured, sailors wore black armbands in mourning, flags flew at half-mast, and mock funerals were held for their beloved ration.
Spirits have always been part of our history — not just in the glass, but in the traditions and stories we carry forward.
