Beaver found her forever home 💙

She came to the Unit late last year needing a second chance, and this year the right family found her. Now she is settling in beautifully, and clearly loving every minute.

This is why we do what we do.

This morning around 8 we got a call: a horse loose in traffic in Allandale, near Northdale. Our team responded right away.

And then something special happened. Community members came out to help us catch the horse and bring it to safety. It shows how much people are willing to help, and we are so grateful 💙

The horse is haltered, calm and out of harm's way.

Thank you to everyone who stepped in this morning. If you ever see a horse loose or in danger, call our Inspectorate on 083 628 3284 or 083 843 5358. This morning, that call made all the difference 🐴💙

Sensitive content: this post discusses the loss of a newborn foal.

Late on Thursday evening we received a call from a rural horse owner about a newborn filly, born just a day earlier, who could not stand.

Our team went out into the night. On examination we found a severe fracture to her left hind leg. The injury was too serious. There was no realistic possibility of recovery.

We did not make the decision quickly. It was midnight when, after carefully assessing her condition, we chose to euthanise her, to prevent further pain and suffering. It is never an easy outcome, for the owner or for anyone involved. Sometimes humane euthanasia is the kindest, most compassionate option there is, when an animal is suffering and cannot be saved.

She was not alone. Our team was with her, and her owner too, until the end.

To the owner: thank you for reaching out, and for putting your filly's welfare first through an incredibly difficult situation. That is what putting the horse first looks like, even when the ending is not the one anyone hoped for.

We have seen this amazing transformation on the Coastal Horse Care Unit's page, but we are so proud and happy to share this wonderful story again.

'Valour's' weight gain is shown after a mere 6 weeks on our Stud pellets.

A 14% protein diet, medium starch and fully fortified all 'Valour' needed was good roughage, Epol and TLC and he has been given another opportunity at a happy life.
Epol has pledged 6 months of food to 'Valour' to assist Coastal Horse Care Unit with the cost of his rehabilitation before he finds his forever home.

We are so proud to be associated with this organization. They do such an amazing job endlessly devoted to assisting horses every day.

This week our trailer lost a tyre while loaded with hay bales donated by Dela Maiwald, leaving our team stranded roadside. Huge thanks to Mr Glen Brown from KBM Truck & Plant , who sent his own bakkie and trailer to rescue the donated grass. Angels really do show up when you need them most. Thankfully, no one was hurt.
Sadly our trailer needs serious repairs, the wheel, rim and whole axle must be replaced. If funds allow, we'd love to upgrade to a double axle for extra strength.
There's still hay waiting to be collected, but we can't get to it until the trailer is fixed.
Please consider donating towards repairs so we can keep bringing donated grass home to our horses. Thank you for standing by us.

**A Heartfelt Thank You to Annie Palmer Equine Therapist and Annie Palmer 🐴❤️**

Behind every horse’s rehabilitation journey is a team of people who give their time, knowledge and hearts to helping them recover — and we are incredibly grateful to have **Annie Palmer from Affinity Equine Therapy** as part of ours.

Annie generously volunteers her time, patience and expertise to support the rehabilitation of our rescue horses. Through treatments including **Transeva, Equissage and BEMER therapy**, Annie assists us in developing individual conditioning and treatment programmes for horses requiring additional support on their journey to recovery.

With broad experience across many areas of the equine industry — including working with racehorses — Annie brings a wealth of knowledge and understanding to every horse she works with.

But perhaps what we appreciate most is the kindness, patience and genuine care she brings with her.
