Part 2 of our second year Concept Art students' environment explorations. Here, they've used 3D modelling to aid in visualisation of different angles, augmented with simple texturing and overpainting.

24/09/2022

Today we celebrate our cultures, diversities and traditions! This beautiful country belongs to all of us, and we're so happy to be here with you. 🇿🇦

Photos from Academy of Digital Arts's post 23/09/2022

The use of 3D software in environment design has and is becoming more commonplace in concept design. The ability to create simple 3D renders, augment with simple texturing and overpainting them is a highly efficient way to visualise ideas. The use of 3D allows for the visualisation of ideas from multiple camera angles for both interior and exterior concepts.

It has been exciting to see how our second year Concept Art students designed, rendered and overpainted their 3D exterior environments. A key focus for exteriors is paying attention to the atmosphere and natural elements of the scene.

21/09/2022

We're all about giving our students a great experience - from the knowledge and learning we convey, to the guidance and support of our lecturers and instructors.

20/09/2022

Concept Art often leads into other areas of the creative industry such as production and/or motion graphics. Production graphics are generally 'finished' art which can include the design of sprites, animated content, and other standalone graphics typically used in the and industries.

Have a look at how some of our 2nd year Concept Art students interpreted this assignment.

For every company, a component of their brand is their website. Learning how to translate that identity into a digital platform layout is integral to being a good UI designer. As part of their course, our UX/UI students study the fundamentals of branding and design, which they then carry through into their UI layouts and a variety of brand personalities.

Photos from Academy of Digital Arts's post 09/09/2022

Our first year Concept Art students are currently delving into the field of high end illustration, and putting all their learned skills to the test! The work is looking incredible, and we thought we'd treat you to a Friday sneak peek!

Photos from Academy of Digital Arts's post 08/09/2022

We love some good design and layout prep! Check out a few moodboards, wireframes, low-fi layouts and UI kits from a few of our UX/UI Web Students. 😍

Photos from Academy of Digital Arts's post 06/09/2022

Understanding work process is vital for creating environments as a concept artist. One of the most essential work processes to understand when designing in 2D, is the ability to conceptualise, add values, take these to a texture and light phase, and then to overpaint. Have a look at some of the first environments that were designed this year by our Concept Art students!

What can we say? Our lecturers and instructors are inspiring! They also live, breathe and work in the industry, so they know what they're talking about.

Photos from Academy of Digital Arts's post 29/08/2022

What's more intimidating than presenting your idea to your lecturer? Presenting your idea to a real live client!

Our UX/UI web students recently got to experience that for themselves as they talked their client through their concepts, approaches and wireframes, and waited to hear how they were received. Happily the client was excited by what they heard, and the students now have the opportunity to improve their designs before their formal pitches.

Thank you to @ct.culinary for taking the time to sit with every team!

This week, we were fortunate to be joined by experienced Alumni, Subi and Cilna. Each explored their career journeys and shared insights into working in the industry - Subi as a freelance illustrator, and Cilna as a designer in the fields of branding and packaging.

If you're even slightly curious about our virtual study options, here is what a few of our virtual students have had to say about the experience. 🙌 (All good things of course, because we're just that awesome.)

And, in case you were worried, rest assured that with this study option you get the same level of interaction with the class & lecturers, because we're a rather social bunch and we believe in community.

Apply now for 2023 to secure your spot!

PS: Our application process is now fully online. Create your online portal, select the virtual study option and complete the application requirements - it's that easy!

It's always at this time of year that something clicks. We love this moment! ❤️ As the students enter into the last part of the year we begin to see more polished work and strong concepts. It’s a great moment when concept and design come together. Hope you enjoy these label designs as much as we do.

The creation of characters for film and game often requires a much higher level of rendering than those designed for animation. As a concept artist, rendering can be the most time consuming aspect of this process, so knowing how to speed up your workflow is important. This may involve using base templates or photo reference, to draw and design over, as well as incorporating photo content with digital painting, to save time with rendering, and to improve the overall quality of the design.

We've been excited to see what our first year Concept Art students have created with their new skills. Have a look!

Let's shake things up with a fun, fresh web UI design. As always, our UX/UI students from our web design specialisation course work through their layouts from conceptualisation and planning, to wireframing and designing for multiple platforms.

Design elements and principles such as heirarchy, balance, colour palettes, consistency and visual communication should always be top of mind. How do you think Rebecca did?

Photos from Academy of Digital Arts's post 17/08/2022

As you may have heard, everything we do ADA is geared towards making our students industry ready! 💪

So, this week in Workshop, we chatted stepping into the business of the creative industry. @@joshuajaychristie talked about navigating income and taxes as a creative, and @andrew.avvakoumides.art gave insights into the business of concept art.

Creature design relies heavily on the artists understanding of creature anatomy and how that knowledge can be used to create new, and compelling ideas. This requires active study of existing creature anatomy to understand how to recreate it in drawing, and how it can be modified and combined with similar other anatomical structures in a manner that still makes a convincing and functional creature.

Can you recognise the animals that might have inspired our Concept Art student's work?

Creating stylised characters for animation often requires that one is able to depict the character from multiple angles and in different poses. Understanding the visual style of the character, its anatomy and how to construct it using clean clear line art are important skills you'll need to succeed in this assignment.

The graphics students have been sharpening their skills over the last couple of weeks. Check out these really great engaging adverts. 🙌

For this brief the graphics students were asked to choose a brand, product or service and create an advert for them. They needed to ensure the hook was conceptually strong. It could be funny, serious or descriptive but it had to be accompanied by a strong visual created in Photoshop.

For those who are asking “What’s a hook?”. A marketing hook is a tagline, slogan or jingle that's both memorable and aligned with a brand. It's an effective extension of a brand, because it supports the product and helps lure customers into at least checking out the item advertised.

Keep your eye peeled. More fun stuff coming soon.

Did you know the Academy of Digital Arts offers so much more than our full time, Higher Certificate courses? (Which are phenominal, by the way).

But if you don't have a whole year available, or are just looking for something short and sweet, we have you covered too!

Photos from Academy of Digital Arts's post 05/07/2022

Our 1st year Concept Art students are currently learning about Creature and Character Design. In both cases, it's important to use a variety of references and inspirations, as well as explore different combinations and iterations until you hit the sweet spot! From there, it's onto rendering and creating a beautiful work of art.

Can't wait to see how these turn out!

Advanced vehicle design can be one of the toughest challenges for concept artists if you don’t know where to begin.

At ADA we teach students a variety of methods to meet the challenge head-on, which includes starting with 2D designs created inside, top or front view, and then from those, to create a basic framework using 3D software. These frameworks can then be viewed through any camera angle, rendered out, and drawn over in order to create a final three-dimensional design.

See how some of our second year Concept Art students tackled the latest vehicle design assignment.

Congrats to all our students on the great work done so far this year, keep it up!

Our Graphic Design students have started to explore the fundamental skills needed for combining multiple images using Photoshop.

This fun exercise titled ‘Inner World’ asked the students explore themselves as well as how to get the best out of Photoshop. We can’t wait to see what they conceptualise for their advert brief coming soon!
