A Brief History
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has established the Cape Academy of Mathematics, Science and Technology in Cape Town to provide specialised schooling for learners with the potential to excel in these subjects in the Senior Certificate examinations. The Academy accepts both day learners and boarders, and is situated in attractive surroundings in Firgrove Road, Constantia, Cape Town. The Academy draws learners from all communities, with an emphasis on those from previously disadvantage communities. The Academy forms part of a broad WCED Mathematics, Science Strategy and Technology to improve results in these subjects throughout the province. The Academy offers:
Residential accommodation for 300 learners,
A safe, secure learning environment in a beautiful setting, Transport for day learners to-and-from the nearest railway stations (Heathfield and Retreat)
Experienced, highly qualified staff. The media of instruction is English.

From Inspiration to Innovation: CAMST Matric Learner Damian Lambert Invited to Speak at Windaba 2026

The Cape Academy of Mathematics, Science and Technology (CAMST) is proud to celebrate the remarkable achievements of Grade 12 learner Damian Lambert, whose journey over the past year is a powerful example of how exposure, curiosity and perseverance can shape a young person’s future.

Damian attended the WindAc Africa conference in 2025, an experience that left a lasting impression on him and played an important role in shaping his aspirations. At the time, Damian had intended to pursue a career as a chartered accountant. Inspired by what he encountered through the wind-energy and engineering environment, however, he challenged himself to reconsider his path and ultimately redirected his university applications towards engineering.
That inspiration did not stop at a change in career aspirations. Damian spent almost a year developing his Eskom Expo for Young Scientists project, the Omnidirectional Piezoelectric Wind Energy Harvester (OPWEH). Despite not having access to the materials or funding required to construct a physical prototype, he developed a simulator and validated his results against real-world recordings from academia. His work subsequently earned him a Bronze Medal in the Energy category at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists.

His achievements extend beyond science and engineering. During 2026, Damian also represented CAMST as Board 1 of the school's Under-19 chess team, occupying the top board and serving as the team's highest-rated player. His performance on the chessboard reflects the same qualities evident in his academic work: strategic thinking, perseverance, problem-solving and a willingness to challenge himself.

Now, in a remarkable full-circle moment, Damian has been invited to return to the wind-energy community that helped inspire his journey.
Damian has been selected to attend WindAc Africa 2026, where he will have the opportunity to present his OPWEH project and share the story behind its development. He has also entered the Adopt-a-Learner Competition associated with WindAc Africa 2026.
