Let's take a look back at our booth at the KZN Art Fair in Hilton College!

We were honoured to be featured at the inaugural KZN Arts Fair — the beginning of many more to come. It was a beautiful step in bringing the KZN art community back to life. Congratulations to the team and for making this Fair a success.

Happening next week at the Art Resource Centre🗣...

Durban has a rich history of artist-led initiatives, many of which have made significant contributions to the development of the city's artistic and cultural sector but remain largely undocumented. Our latest series of public discussions, ‘Local art histories’, aims to address this by documenting the oral histories of grassroots initiatives from Durban and KwaZulu-Natal, reflecting on their role in the local arts sector and historical relevance.

The first discussion in the series focuses on Community Arts Workshop (CAW), a non-racial, multidisciplinary arts hub on Walnut Road that operated from 1983 to 1987. Initiated by Gert Swart and Brian Berlien, with support from Andries Botha, CAW became a vital space for artistic production, education, and exchange. The workshop provided artists' studio space, offered sculpture and portraiture workshops, and even held exhibitions, hosting the FUBA Art Collection in 1984.

Both Swart and Berlien will participate in the discussion at the Art Resource Centre, joined by Paul Sibisi, an active supporter of the project. Together, they will reflect on the CAW's origins, how it functioned as a self-organised, artist-led initiative, and the political climate that shaped its founding. The panel will also draw connections between other arts center's of the period, underscoring the relevance of artist-led collectives in the present moment.

Making Art History From Below

It is often said that history is written by the victors. In the 1970’s and 80’s, progressive historians began writing a “people’s history” of South Africa “from below” to counter the official narrative that marginalised the experiences of black South Africans. The Africa South Art Initiative, a non-profit company, has positioned itself as “making art history from below.” What does it mean to ‘make’ art history, and to do so ‘from below’?

Is it possible to impact on local and global art histories, especially when one works from a position of limited resources, or is this a well-intentioned but pointless exercise, destined, at best, to advance marginal art histories?

Join Cedric Nunn (Photographer), Mario Pissarra (Director, Africa South Art Initiative), and Tsholofelo Moche (Lecturer, UKZN) in reflecting on these questions, drawing on their own positionalities in the art world, and with emphasis on ASAI’s new publication, On the Map: perspectives on art from africa south.

Venue: KZN Art Fair, College Avenue, Hilton, KwaZulu-Natal Midlands
Date: 8 August 2026
Time: 14:30
