The Bishops 1st XI returned from a memorable Cape Schools’ Cricket Week at Graeme College in Makhanda, with the weather certainly making its presence felt!

Despite rain and waterlogged outfields disrupting the schedule, the boys made their opportunities count:

142-run win vs Graeme College
41-run win vs Pearson in the T20

And plenty more to celebrate…

Over the next week, Bishops is proud to host the prestigious National Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships, welcoming some of South Africa’s finest young speakers and thinkers to our campus.

The championship brings together nearly 80 competitors from across the country, providing a platform for talented students to showcase their debating, public speaking, and critical thinking skills at the highest level.

We are especially proud that six Bishops boys have qualified to compete across various categories, representing the College against the nation’s top individual speakers. Their participation is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and commitment to excellence in public speaking and debate.

We extend a warm welcome to all competitors, coaches, adjudicators, and visiting schools, and wish every participant the very best as they engage in a week of challenging competition, intellectual exchange, and personal growth.

Good luck to our Bishops representatives and to all those taking part in this outstanding national event. We look forward to an inspiring week of competition and conversation.

A fantastic achievement that reflects the team’s resilience, determination and never-give-up attitude. We are incredibly proud of the way they battled through every challenge and came out on top!

We mourn the passing of Grant Nupen, who joined Bishops in March 2001 and served as the school’s 13th Principal until his retirement in 2012. Prior to his appointment at Bishops, he was Principal of St Alban’s College.
Through his vision and leadership, the Bishops 2010 Conference was established, making a significant contribution to the school’s transformation journey.

Grant was highly respected by students, staff and the wider school community. One senior College student remarked: “I really enjoy Mr Nupen’s talks in Assembly; he gives us something to think about.” Others have described him as “a gentleman, a great leader, and a man of wisdom and integrity.”

His wife, Rosemary, has a longstanding connection to Bishops. She grew up on the school estate, where her parents, Herby and Joan Selfe, lived for 36 years. Following his retirement, Grant and Rosemary settled in Bryanston, Gauteng.

We give thanks for Grant’s leadership, service, and lasting contribution to Bishops. His wisdom, integrity, and commitment to the school community will be remembered with gratitude and respect.
Our deepest sympathies go to Rosemary, Stewart, Julia, Douglas and Lindy, as well as to all who knew and loved him.
May he rest in peace.

Big Ideas recently embarked on its annual trip to Bonnievale to visit Jakes Gerwel Tegnies, and every kilometre of the journey was worth it. The boys had the opportunity to witness a truly “Big Idea” brought to life, not just as a vision, but as a thriving and fully operational reality.

Although we visit this remarkable school every year, its story continues to inspire and amaze us. It serves as a powerful reminder that when a bold dream is matched with passionate people, unwavering commitment, and a shared purpose, extraordinary things can happen.

Thank you, Jakes Gerwel Tegnies, for reminding us that the biggest ideas are the ones that create lasting impact.

Our Grade 8 boys have been putting the Bishops values of kindness, compassion and service into action through a wonderful food parcel project.

The boys collected essential groceries which were then packed and delivered to SA Children’s Home and Vision Child, supporting children and families in our wider community.

A huge thank you to our Grade 8 boys, their families and everyone who contributed. Your generosity makes a meaningful difference, and it is wonderful to see our young men learning that service is not simply something we talk about, but something we do.
