An Opinion Writer Argued Jill Biden Should Drop the ‘Dr.’ (Few Were Swayed.) 14/12/2020

Amy Tan
"Albert Einstein was widely called Dr Einstein in the US. He received a PhD. He won a Nobel. Marie Curie was widely called Madame Curie and not Dr Curie. (Madame is what married women in France are called). She earned a PhD in physics and won TWO Nobels, one in physics, the other in chemistry. She was praised at the presentation of her Nobel by the Swedish Academy for being a “helpmeet” to her husband. Her husband, who co-shared the first Nobel, was actually the helpmeet to her discovery set forth in her PhD thesis, but he was awarded a full professorship and more; she was not. She was, as William Harding dismissively put it, a model of womanhood, “a devoted wife.”

"That there sums up the deep injustice women have had to endure. Being treated with less respect, as if they are less than a man, is the pervasive condescension and insult foisted on women today and in all walks of life, resulting in unequal pay, fewer promotions, fewer positions of leadership, less respect of their knowledge at meetings, and less credit for their achievements.

"I applaud Dr Biden for refusing to give way to the sentiments of misogynists, including the WSJ opinion writer who dismissively addressed her by the diminutive “kiddo.” No respect for the WSJ for running that opinion. I hope women and men publicly support her right to be called Dr Biden."

An Opinion Writer Argued Jill Biden Should Drop the ‘Dr.’ (Few Were Swayed.) Many women said Joseph Epstein’s suggestion in The Wall Street Journal was blatantly sexist and underscored the way men often dismiss women’s credentials.
